FRUSTRATED Garry Hill. claimed Grays Athletic’s 2-0 win over Weymouth flattered the champions.
Strikers Martin Carthy and Tony Battersby netted in each half to seal another Conference South win for the under-strength Essex side at the Recreation Ground.
But Hill reckons the Terras more than matched the FA Trophy finalists and were worthy of least a point.
He said: “I’m really quite frustrated because if we had won by two or three Grays could not have complained.
“They scored twice from about three chances, yet we’ve created eight or nine openings but not got on the scoresheet.
“The scoreline flattered Grays, who I accept had players missing ahead of the FA Trophy final but have still steamrolled everyone this season.
“Darren Wheeler, Brian Dutton, Steve Clark and Matt Bound all had good opportunities to score at various times but unfortunately there’s a thin dividing line between success and failure.
“The difference was they took the few chances that came their way and we got punished for not taking ours.
“Having said that I was pleased with the lads effort and attitude, they pretty much did everything but score and the response from our fans at the end showed they appreciated their efforts.”
Carthy headed Grays into an early lead following an error by Terras keeper Jason Matthews, but Hill was not pointing the finger at his number one for the setback.
He said: “Jason misjudged the cross which led to their first goal which came at a crucial time early on when we had started well.
“It was a disappointing mistake but I’m not going to criticise him because these things happen in football.”
