DEAN Evans reckons victories like Tuesday’s against Cambridge City are just what the Terras need to show they can last the course this season.
Evans scored the only goal of the game at the Bob Lucas Stadium as Weymouth leapt into third place in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.
The midfielder’s 23rd-minute strike was his fifth of the current league campaign and one which ultimately sealed back-to-back wins for Jason Matthews’ men.
Evans was understandably delighted to be the Terras’ match-winner on the night, but the manner in which he and his team-mates ground out the result was just as pleasing.
“It was a solid performance,” he told Echosport. “If we want to progress and do well this season then we’ve got to come out on top in tight games like that, which we did.
“We probably could have played better but the most important thing was getting the three points, and we showed our character in the second half.
“We’ve got a great team spirit and it’s just a case of keeping it going. If we can do that and be consistent then we’ll be there or thereabouts.”
When asked what will be the key to the Terras remaining in the top echelons of the league, he added: “For me, it’s all about the squad we’ve got.
“There are going to be injuries and suspensions between now and the end of the season, but we have got a lot of quality on the bench, probably the best in the league.
“We’ve got quality players to come on when we need them and everyone is working hard to get in the side.”
Midfield enforcer Evans, who has been at the club just shy of a year, is “loving” his football at the moment, and he certainly enjoyed scoring against the Lilywhites on Tuesday.
Evans netted arguably one of the best goals seen at the Bob Lucas Stadium this season, volleying in Chris Shephard’s cross, but he admitted it wasn’t a planned move that led to the goal.

“We have had a few routines we’ve been practicing but that wasn’t one of them and I wasn’t really meant to be there,” he said. “I took a gamble and it paid off.
“Shep took a corner and drilled the ball into the box, I made a run, and as soon as I hit it I could see it was going in.”
