WEYMOUTH chairman Chris Pugsley admitted that, while it was frustrating that the Terras’ scheduled home game against Cirencester Town did not go ahead on Saturday due to a safety issue, he could understand the decision made by the match official.
Damage to a part of the Terras’ main stand at the Bob Lucas Stadium was brought to the attention of the referee, who sought advice from the FA while Terras’ club officials looked to rectify the issue ahead of kick off, as both teams waited for a verdict on whether the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division contest would go ahead.
In the end, having already been cordoned off, the section of the stand was deemed to be unsafe for the contest to take place.
Speaking about the situation, chairman Pugsley told Echosport: “There was storm damage to the main stand and there was a piece which was hanging and flapping.
“The referee, quite correctly deemed it as dangerous.
“The fire service came down and were very helpful but, unfortunately, they couldn’t get up there to assess it or take it off.
“It’s very unfortunate and it’s obviously going to be an expense to the club but there was absolutely nothing at all we could do about it.”
He added: “Should any incident have occurred, somebody would have to be held liable. I wouldn’t want it to be Weymouth Football Club.
“The health and safety of everyone was paramount.”
