TERRAS’ boss Jason Matthews has underlined the efforts the club went through to try and capture a goalscorer to boost their firepower in the run-in.
Weymouth have scored 57 goals from their 43 league outings so far, the joint lowest total in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division top eight at present. Relegated Histon have also scored one more goal than the Terras from the same number of games played.
Commenting on his prolonged search to find a fresh goal scorer, which did not come to fruition, Matthews, whose side landed the Dorset Senior Cup for the second time in a row on Tuesday, told Echosport: “We did try to get an extra striker in and it wasn’t to be.
“I tried for three or four months to get the striker that everybody wanted and the chairman (Chris Pugsley) backed me in that department, but it’s just the vicinity we are in.
“People went against signing for us and went elsewhere, that was incredibly frustrating.”
And as much as the Terras’ chief insisted that last season’s top-scorer Stewart Yetton “works his socks off” for the side, he admitted “it’s just not happening for him” in front of goal.
“I think that Yetts would say himself, it just has not been his season,” Matthews added.
“Nobody would like Yetts to score goals more than me. He works his socks off for me and, credit to him, he has obviously got himself back fit, but in front of goal, it’s just not happening for him.
“Nobody could have legislated for that happening at the start of the season, having been the league’s top scorer last year.”
