TERRAS’ ace Ashley Wells believes today’s win-or-bust clash away at Chesham United will be one of the biggest games of his life as the Terras chase the final play-off spot (3pm).
Wells, like the rest of the team and fans of the club, know a win and a Hungerford victory over Leamington Town is the only way they can reach the post season stages.
The full-back has been an integral part of the Terras’ side this season and knows the nerves will kick in this afternoon.
He told Echosport: “This will definitely be one of the biggest games of my career.
“When I joined the club we were fighting relegation so I’ve played with pressure before, but this will be different.
“At the moment the team is quite relaxed. We will play with no fear and we are confident, but I know the nerves will kick in once the game starts.”
“Anything less than a win will be the end for us. There is a job to be done.”
Wells used to watch football at the Bob Lucas Stadium when Weymouth were in their heyday playing in the Conference Premier.
Having slipped down from their peak, Wells is keen to get his club back where they belong and knows a win today is a good start.
“I want to put Weymouth back on the map,” he explained. “I’d love to get them back to where they belong.
“This club has given me a chance when they signed me from Portland United and I’m really grateful for that.
“I want to repay their faith, and I think I’m doing that.
“We have so much quality that I think if we were to go up (to the National League South) then we wouldn’t be out of our depth.”
With Weymouth having to rely on Hungerford if they are to have any chance of securing that last play-off spot, there will be a lot of checking scores at Chesham.
However Wells is completely focused on the task at hand, and will resist the temptation to look at scores from elsewhere.
“I don’t think we will find out,” he added. “We know we have to win and that is the aim.”
n Weymouth’s bid for the play-offs were dealt a blow on Thursday as Kettering beat Bideford 7-0.
This means the Terras have to not only hope Hungerford win but they must also better the Poppies’ result by three goals.
“We will definitely be going for it.”
