STEWART Yetton is backing Charlie Davis to slot in at full-back for the Terras at Biggleswade Town if needed on Saturday – although he does see the funny side of the potential positional change.
The former Dorchester and Poole Town midfielder switched to right-back against Eastleigh and in Weymouth’s last pre-season friendly against Truro City, after Ashley Wells went off with a knee injury.
With Wells struggling to be fit for the season opener, Yetton has confidence in Davis to step into the role, should player-manager Jason Matthews opt to use him in that position.
“I think Charlie has settled in really well,” the Terras’ frontman told Echosport.
“We wind him up and I keep telling him that Jase has brought him in as a back-up right-back.
“He keeps having to slot in there, so we keep telling him that he is the best back-up right-back around at the minute!
“He went in there last Saturday because Ash went off but, credit to him, he looked really good in there.
“He is another player who plays centre midfield but can play other positions, so it is looking really positive.”
Portland United’s Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division campaign got off to the perfect start with a 2-0 victory over Verwood Town at Potterne Park this evening.
Goals from Ed Bastick and Ryan McKechnie proved enough for the newly-promoted Blues against the Potters, who had two men sent off on the night.
