Rebels run riot as Weymouth are tamed in loss at Slough Town

AFTER the highs of Saturday’s 6-1 victory at Basingstoke, Weymouth were brought back down to earth with a bang having been second best at Slough Town.

The Rebels completed a league double over a Terras’ side that failed to find their feet on the 3G pitch at Arbour Park.

Visiting boss Jason Matthews made just one change from the side that blitzed Basingstoke Town 6-1 on Saturday.

With Chris Shephard out through injury, in came player-assistant Mark Molesley in the visitors’ midfield.

On the subject of midfielders, back into the squad came Billy Lowes after his spell at Wimborne Town.

Weymouth were slow to start on a night in which the Rebels were relatively in control throughout – Slough took the lead on four minutes.

A foul in the box meant referee Jason Richardson awarded the Rebels a penalty and up stepped Gavin James, the man who was fouled, to convert from the spot and put the hosts in front.

Just two minutes later, it was almost 2-0 but for some heroics from Tom McHale in the Terras’ goal. He pulled off a sublime double save, the second from almost point-blank range to deny Slough’s Manny Williams.

Terras’ striker Stuart Fleetwood then saw his muted appeals for a penalty at the other end waved away, as the visitors looked rocked in the opening 15 minutes.

As the away side looked to settle, they came close with a rare chance to make it 1-1. A corner swung in was met by defender Jake Wannell, who glanced just wide.

McHale then found his way into the book after rushing off his line and bringing down Williams in a wide area after the winger chased a loose ball out wide.

The Weymouth stopper was kept busy in the opening half and did well to thwart Rebels’ striker Chris Flood just before the break.

Flood was not to be denied just seven minutes after the break however, as the hosts doubled their lead early in the second half.

A slick counter was capped off by the striker, after he latched onto a ball from James to make it 2-0.

Weymouth midfielder Dean Evans then rose to meet a corner unchallenged with his head but it was straight at the keeper. That came before Matthews looked to change things from the bench as Chris Allen was replaced by Stewart Yetton.

Jordan Copp was then replaced by Aaron Rodriguez with just under 20 minutes left, as Yetton just failed to get on the end of a dangerous ball from Ashley Wells.

Lowes then capped his return after he replaced Molesley, but it was not to matter as James added his second of the night and the Rebels’ third to make it 3-0 and send the Terras’ home with nothing.
