TERRAS’ midfielder Charlie Davis insisted “I would be more than happy to be at Weymouth next season” but admitted the current squad are now fighting for future contracts.
The former AFC Bournemouth youngster made a controversial move to the Bob Lucas Stadium from Dorchester Town last summer, but stuck by the fact that he signed for Weymouth with a view for the long-term.
Davis, who has been playing with a glued wound on the inside of his shin in recent games, also claimed that there is still the same hunger in the Weymouth squad as there was at the start of the campaign.
Asked if Weymouth is where he would like to be next season, the former Poole Town man replied: “It’s difficult. With the season we have had, I don’t think that two months before the end of the season the manager is going to anyone and saying ‘here’s a contract for next year’.
“I moved to Weymouth because I thought it would be a good move for my future, not because I thought ‘oh, that would be good for a season’.
“It was controversial but it was something I did with my future in mind.
“I signed under Jason and the regime they have got with Paul (Maitland), Moles (Mark Molesley) and Micky (Greeno) and I still very much buy into what they are trying to do.
“They try and play football the way that I like to and they are trying new formations at the moment which I think would suit me a lot next season, so it’s very much a club I’d like to be at.
“I would be more than happy to be at Weymouth next season. I’m just hoping we can keep the nucleus of the team.”
He added: “I think it’s well documented and it’s common knowledge that contracts are won and lost at this stage of the season. Everyone is fighting and as hungry as they were at the start of the season.
“There is no hiding behind the fact that we haven’t got to where we thought we would, or where we wanted to.
“But everyone wants to play every minute. People still get frustrated when they are on the bench and it’s a really good environment with people’s will to win.
“I probably haven’t hit the heights that I did last year at Dorchester, here. Maybe in spells I have done well but not good enough two months before the season to say ‘yeah I’ll be here next year’.
“It is very much that everyone is fighting for a place and a contract.”
