It’s a dream start for Maitland and Molesley as Generals sunk
WEYMOUTH 2
Thomson 63, Rodriguez 81
CHESHAM UNITED 0
WEYMOUTH kept their unbeaten run going following Jason Matthews’ midweek departure, with a convincing 2-0 victory over Chesham United.
Goals from Ben Thomson and Aaron Rodriguez in the second period at the Bob Lucas Stadium got caretaker managers Mark Molesley and Paul Maitland off to a dream start.
Molesley and Maitland continued to play the 3-5-2 system which Matthews adopted for his last two months in charge of the club but there were three changes from the side that beat Gillingham Town in the Dorset Senior Cup final in midweek.
In came keeper Nick Thomas for his league debut in place of Matthews. Sean Stewart and Dean Evans came back in for Billy Lowes and Aaron Rodriguez.
The Terras’ decisive goalscorer in midweek was defender Stephane Zubar and he was almost at it again after just 90 seconds on this occasion.
A corner drilled in at the near post by Charlie Davis found the Weymouth skipper, who flicked the ball just wide looking for his fourth goal in three games.
After Chesham’s Toby Little fired wide at the other end, the hosts came within inches of opening the scoring on 12 minutes.
Stuart Fleetwood burst down the left and teed up strike partner Ben Thomson, whose touch when sliding in from close range just was not strong enough to turn the ball home.
Keeper Thomas was then tasked in making his first save of the afternoon, but he looked assured as he kept out Chesham’s Alex Ward, who tried his luck from distance.
Thomson then spurned another glorious opportunity for the hosts just before the half-hour mark. On this occasion, Cooper delivered from the right but the powerful frontman could not hit the target from five yards out.
It was to be the Weymouth frontman’s time on 63 minutes however, as he finally found the net.
A terrible clearance from Chesham keeper Richard Hayward was pounced on by Thomson, who raced through, took it round the stopper and slotted home for 1-0.
That was to be the striker’s last meaningful act as he was replaced by Aaron Rodriguez.
Chesham then had the opportunity to get back in it after the Terras gave away a free-kick on the edge of their box but Generals’ substitute Danny Talbot fired over the bar on the angle.
But the points were settled on 81 minutes as Weymouth capitalised on another goalkeeping error. Gloveman Hayward found himself in no man’s land to deal with a ball over the top, his header went nowhere and there was Rodriguez to finish well from the edge of the box and wrap up the points.
