‘The real test is yet to come,’ says Weymouth boss Mark Molesley after victory over Exeter City
BOSS Mark Molesley is not getting carried away by his side’s 1-0 win over Exeter City, claiming “the hard work is still to come”.
Weymouth recorded an impressive 1-0 success over a strong Grecians outfit at the Bob Lucas Stadium, with new signing Jake McCarthy drilling home the only goal of the friendly on five minutes to give the Terras a hard-earned triumph over Football League opposition.
But Molesley was eager not to get too excited by the result and was more focused on his side’s work-rate.
He told Echosport: “The real test is yet to come but it has been a good start. We gave a very good account of ourselves against a very good side.
“It was a job well done and another 55 or 65 minutes for people. Hopefully we are starting to get the match legs into them now.”
He added: “The lads are getting on well and showing a good attitude at the moment. That’s all we can ask for at this stage of pre-season.
“We certainly haven’t done anything yet, the hard work is still to come.”
In front of a crowd of 412, McCarthy was handed the captain’s armband on the night for the home side and he led by example, finding the net after just five minutes.
The midfielder met the ball on the edge of the box and drilled it past Exeter keeper Christy Pym, into the bottom corner.
And it almost got even better for the home side when striker Brandon Goodship let fly at goal after being teed up by Calvin Brooks on 19 minutes, only to be denied by the crossbar.
Exeter then started to show their class towards the end of the first half, their best chance of the opening 45 minutes came right on the stroke of half-time but Ryan Harley fired inches wide of the far post.
The lively Jack Sparkes then clipped the outside of the far post for Exeter on 75 minutes as the visitors pushed for a leveller.
Sparkes then hit the woodwork again after his shot was denied by a fine save from Terras’ substitute goalkeeper Nick Thomas, as the hosts held firm for victory.
