Weymouth College was the venue for a fantastic first league game of the season, against local rivals Cougars AFC in atrocious conditions at Cranford Avenue.
Weymouth, who included 4 new signings, started strongly going into the wind and rain against an excellent cougar’s side with first Finn Davies firing over and then Owen Peart twice coming close in the first 10 minutes. However it was Cougars that drew first blood when a counter attack down the left, left the Terras defence exposed in the centre and Connor Stickland was given no chance in goal with a terrific shot low into Sticklands right hand corner.
The Terras continued to press with Jack Crouch causing all sorts of problems down the right being very much a feature but they were hit with a second sucker punch with another counter attack on 25 minutes when Weymouths defence found themselves outnumbered and a shot from 25 yards ripped into the net via the underside of the bar giving Stickland little hope again.
Weymouth could count themselves unlucky to be 2 goals down but were given a lifeline in first half in jury time when good work from Ole Underhay and Tommy Jeff released Finn Davies and he made no mistake firing low into the corner to halve the deficit.
The Terras came out with all guns blazing in the second half and went close through Luca Davies and then only some sharp goalkeeping denied Owen Peart.
Manager Martin Underhay started to ring the changes by introducing the creative Zac Sparrow but the Terras fell further behind when they failed to clear their lines despite having a few chances to do so, the ball eventually fell to a cougars player 8 yards out and he fired ruthlessly into the top corner.
Midfielder Tommy Jeff then decided to take the game by the scruff of the neck and aided by Ole Underhay and then Samuel Farmer, the Terras started to totally dominate and they were rewarded when good work from Jeff released Owen Peart, Pearts inch perfect pass found Luca Davies who coolly ran through and slotted the ball past the advancing Keeper.
Weymouth were completely in control now with excellent forward play by Sparrow and Mathuis Kawalec, and with Owen Peart now looking an enormous threat in the centre, you felt that it would be a matter of time. Sure enough 10 minutes from time it was Kawalec down the left that found Peart in the centre and his low drive brought the scores level.
Weymouth were now looking for the winner, Cougars had the odd attack but the brilliant Tyler Jeff at the back took care of any Threat. Peart was causing all sorts of problems for the Cougars defence and only an incredible save from the goalkeeper denied him a minute from time.
Still it wasn’t over and in the 3rd minute of injury time, good work on the right from Sparrow found Luca Davies who freed Peart on the left and his crashing drive smashed off the underside of the bar with both Luca Davies and Tommy Jeff following in but neither could get the decisive touch to earn the points.
So the points were shared in the ‘Dual in the Rain’ at the college and a solid start for the team moving forward.
