Weymouth put the Generals to the sword

WEYMOUTH took a huge step towards securing their play-off spot as they routed Chesham United thanks to goals from Calvin Brooks, Harry Baker, Brandon Goodship, Ben Thomson and Abdulai Baggie in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.

It was the third time that Weymouth have scored six in a single match this season and the goals, with Thomson and Baggie’s coming in the first half with the rest in the second, meant it was a very different story to the hard-fought 1-0 win Weymouth had in the side’s last encounter.

Weymouth’s starting side were unchanged from the team that beat Dunstable Town 2-0 last weekend.

The bench saw two changes as Steve Boore and Jordan Ngalo are replaced by Gareth Stewart and Tiago Sa.

Chesham made three changes to the side that drew 0-0 at home to Hitchin Town last time out as Matt Hall, David Hutton and Jefferson Louis come in for Darren Locke, Adam Watkins and Shane Bush.

The Generals had the first real effort on goal five minutes in when they found themselves through on the Weymouth goal with only Will Dennis to beat but their chipped effort went over the bar.

Three minutes later Goodship went close with a shot that forced Hafed Al-Droubi into a save.

The Terras would not have to wait much longer for the lead to come but when it did it came in spectacular fashion.

A mistake from the Chesham defence gave Thomson possession 35-yards out and he calmly lifted it over Al-Droubi to hand Weymouth the lead in the 16th minute.

Chesham managed to respond well and put the Terras under some real pressure as they looked to get back into the match but Weymouth were able to hold firm.

After another 16 minutes Weymouth once again scored, a great pass from Thomson found Baggie who curled the ball under the bar from 25-yards out.

Again the Generals tried to get back at Weymouth and try and get themselves back in the game.

Louis went very close with a volley 20-yards out but Will Dennis pulled off a fantastic save to preserve his hopes of a clean sheet in the 35th minute.

Ultimately Chesham’s first-half efforts proved fruitless as Weymouth were able to take a commanding lead into the break.

Weymouth nearly stretched the lead in the 56th minute as Thomson went on a fantastic run easily beating the Generals’ defence.

From here he put Goodship through but his effort was cleared away by the home side defence.

The fiery tackles then told as Jhai Dhillon went into the book for a late tackle on Brooks.

Shortly after that the home side made their first substitution of the match as Benji Crilley went off for Oran Swales as the Generals looked to improve their defence.

The Terras were still having chances however, as Goodship fired the ball at Al-Droubi with a free-kick on the edge of the box in the 66th minute.

Again Weymouth went close six minutes later.

A mistake from Al-Droubi allowed Goodship to get onto the ball and pass the ball to Brooks who was swiftly surrounded by Chesham who cleared.

Any hope that Chesham had of getting something from the match were eroded by a ferocious two minutes from Weymouth.

Goodship stroked home from the edge of the box for his 30th league goal of the season before he was substituted for Baker in the 75th minute.

Baker needed no introduction and immediately added a fourth in similar fashion to cap a frantic two minutes for Weymouth.

Eight minutes later and Weymouth would again score two goals in two minutes to put the match even further out of sight for their opponents.

This time it would be Brooks who benefitted, as he fired home from a superb pass from Josh Wakefield before smashing in another goal moments later for a quick-fire brace on the 87th minute.

The Generals then had their already bad day get worse as David Hutton was sent off for a second bookable offence as the match ended 6-0, with a fantastic victory for the Terras.

The Terras are next in action at home to fellow play-off contenders Slough Town on Tuesday (7.45pm).
