JAKE McCarthy has warned that the Terras have not reached the peak of what they can do yet, as they prepare to face Basingstoke Town today in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South (3pm).
This comes despite Weymouth sitting at the summit of the table, with 27 points from 12 games and have lost just one league match all season.
McCarthy said: “We have been playing about 70 per cent of what we are capable of.
“We have been doing well in games but we have not been at the best of our game and we still have not reached the peak of what we know we can do yet.”
The Terras go to Basingstoke on the back of a good 3-1 win over Taunton Town in the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy, with goals from Brandon Goodship, Stephane Zubar and Josh Wakefield sealing the win.
McCarthy said: “We have set a benchmark now against Taunton and we want that to be our minimum now and kick on and get better.
“We just need to make sure that we are better than we were last week.”
McCarthy also says the squad is feeling good and that the team cannot wait for the match against Basingstoke today.
McCarthy said: “The squad is feeling really good at the moment, there is a lot of confidence flowing through the club and the players.
“We seem to be picking up results and in good form still so we have just got to keep this going now.”
When asked if it was a bit of a double-edged sword being the league leaders, McCarthy said: “Going into the season as favourites to get promoted we knew that every time someone was playing us it was their cup final so they wanted to take points off us.
“Being at the top of the table adds an extra target onto yourselves and a little bit of pressure but we thrive under the pressure.
“We have been playing well at the moment and we have been top for a while now.
“It is easy getting to the top but it is staying there which is the hardest part.”
However, the Terras can be overtaken at the summit, should Hendon, who have 23 points from 10 games, win their two matches in hand over Weymouth.
Salisbury currently occupy the second spot with 24 points, three behind the Terras on 27 points, from 12 games at this early stage of the season.
