Weymouth Director of Football, Paul Maitland praised the Terras for a professional job after their 1-0 at Street on Tuesday evening.
Abdulai Baggie’s goal in the second-half was enough to see Weymouth through to the third qualifying round of the Buildbase FA Trophy, where they will face St Albans at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
Speaking to theterras.com after Tuesday evenings victory, Maitland said Weymouth were made to work hard for their win, “It was always going to be difficult when you come to Street on their own patch, it was never going to be easy.
“I thought we weathered the storm early on quite well, Jordan made an important save quite early.
“It was always going to be the case that having got back into the game on Saturday they were never going to roll over.”
Street are currently in the playoff positions in the Evo-stik League South Division One South and earned the replay after a two-goal comeback last Saturday.
Maitland continued, “They’ve had a great start to their season, they’ve got great facilities, it’s a good set-up and they’re clearly a club on the up, we wish them the best of luck.
“We’ve come here and did what we needed to do, I’m pleased we’ve kept a clean sheet and got the win.
“Their keeper had another good game tonight, which was probably a fair reflection of the game.
“We had a lot of the ball and I feel that we fully deserved to go through tonight, we now look forward to St Albans in the next round.”
Maitland spent game stood with the supporters behind the goal, although he admitted he did find it ‘hard to watch’, “It was lovely to be stood with the supporters because they are a great bunch, but I’m going to start carrying a defibrillator around as I find it hard to watch at times, it’s a roller-coaster!
“We’re heading in the right direction, I would’ve been disappointed if we hadn’t won in 90-minutes because I feel we were more professional.
“We were everything that we weren’t in the second-half on Saturday. We controlled the game as a whole.”
Weymouth were due to be training on Tuesday evening, but the replay meant they were instead in match action. Maitland explained that he feels the players know they should have finished the tie on Saturday to avoid the extra match.
“The players aren’t stupid, they know they didn’t perform well on Saturday.
“If you ask them, they would probably say they would rather play a game than train. They knew they had to come here and play and get it right, and they’ve done that.
“We play to excite, we play to create chances and the offshoot of that is that sometimes we give up chances in games. It’s a good result and we’ll get ready to go this weekend.”
Weymouth are back in league action when they travel to 20th-placed Kings Langley on Saturday afternoon.
