WEYMOUTH assistant-manager Tom Prodomo is keen to see the Terras challenged by Football League opposition when Southend United visit the Bob Lucas Stadium tonight (7.45pm).
The fixture represents Weymouth’s first home pre-season friendly of the summer following respective 3-1, 4-0 and 3-2 victories over Hamworthy United, Portland United and Wimborne Town.
And the Terras are set to be reunited with popular former striker Brandon Goodship, the goal machine having secured the Southern League golden boot two years in succession before moving to the Shrimpers this June.
Speaking to Echosport, Prodomo revealed he is looking forward to seeing his players tested against the Sky Bet League One outfit.
He said: “First and foremost I’m really excited to see our group challenged against league opposition, and a strong side at that.
“Obviously it’s got the sub-plot of Goody’s return, it’ll be nice for everyone to see and we’ve all wished him well for the season ahead. He deserves the opportunity.
“Also, we need to make sure we’re focusing on ourselves and it’s another step on our preparation to the third of August (first league game).”
Prodomo expects a sustained “intensity” from Southend, but insists the contest comes at a good time for the Terras.
“When you play Football League sides their ability to retain possession is increased on the games you would’ve played so far,” he said.
“They’re professional athletes, training every day. It’ll bring a really good intensity into their game and a persistence in that intensity that they can sustain throughout.
“I think the challenge comes at a good time now because we’ve got a good amount of work into our boys and they’ve returned with good levels of fitness.”
Weymouth have a clean bill of health for the clash, with forward Ben Thomson linking up with the squad after missing the opening three pre-season friendlies.
