Match Preview

Weymouth travel to Canvey Island to take on Concord Rangers in the Vanarama National League South.

Concord have had a fluctuating season but they have had a rise of late, winning four of their last five league games. They have climbed to 11th place. Their most recent league game was their first loss in five as they went down to a 2-0 home defeat to Hampton & Richmond. After a draw in the first game, they got all the way to Bath on Tuesday for an FA Trophy replay, only for the game to be called off at around 7 pm.

The Terras have consolidated sixth place despite an up and down festive period. They will be hoping to win their second away game in succession after a 3-1 win at Welling on 4th January. Many outsiders will have perhaps not seen Weymouth as playoff contenders this season, it is easy to forget that this is the first season back at this level in nearly a decade. However, that prediction grows increasingly foolish as the weeks pass. Current top-scorer Jake McCarthy said that “the play-offs have always been a goal from the start of the season” in a midweek interview with theterras.com. It is hard to argue with that given the standards that Mark and his team continue to set.

In the first-ever meeting between the two teams earlier in the season, Weymouth ran out with a convincing 3-0 win at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Thoughts from the Manager with the Dorset Echo

“We’re going to have to show the same characteristics and determination. Home advantage seems to be quite a big advantage in this league. If we want to stay at the top, we’ve got to pick up points on the road.”
