Match Preview: Stockport County
Preview: Ted Slocombe
The Terras are back in action at the Bob Lucas Stadium this Saturday as Weymouth take on Stockport County in the Vanarama National League.
THE TERRAS
A steady start to the season for Weymouth will have Brian Stock and also the Terras fans in good spirits as Weymouth continue to build their identity within this league. Weymouth come into this game with only 2 defeats (Dagenham and Barnet) in their previous 6 games but against another strong outfit in Stockport County, Brian Stock will be looking for the types of strong performances he’s seen in Solihull and against Maidenhead in order to break down The Hatters’ defence.
Weymouth currently sit 16th with 8 points from their opening 8 games.
Player To Watch: Brandon Goodship
Despite defeat in Barnet, Brandon Goodship picked up his first goal of the league campaign for the Terras. Brian Stock mentioned post-match that he’s been very impressed with Brandon’s attitude in training and that he’s worked incredibly hard, so therefore the goal is a reward for that. There is optimism therefore that Brandon can now kick on and aid the front line as the Terras look to bounce back with three points this weekend.
LAST 6:
BARNET 3-1 TERRAS
TERRAS 1-1 DOVER ATHLETIC
DAGENHAM AND REDBRIDGE 4-2 TERRAS
TERRAS 1-1 NOTTS COUNTY
SOLIHULL MOORS 3-4 TERRAS
TERRAS 3-1 MAIDENHEAD UTD
THE HATTERS
Stockport County have had a mixed start to their league campaign with 3 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats in their opening 8 games. Notable victories include a hard fought 2-1 victory over Wrexham and a 1-0 victory away to Southend United. However, defeats against Dagenham, Yeovil and Halifax find Stockport sitting 11th in the league and 8 points off leaders Dagenham. Last season, the Hatters finished in third place in the National League but were defeated by Hartlepool United in the play offs, who then went on to gain promotion to League 2.
Player To Watch: John Rooney
Brother of England legend Wayne Rooney, John has enjoyed a good start to the season for Stockport so far with 3 goals to his name against Dagenham, Southend and Maidenhead. The Hatters will look to Rooney as a strong outlet in attack as they look to climb the table further towards the summit.
LAST 6:
HATTERS 2-1 WREXHAM
HALIFAX 3-0 HATTERS
MAIDENHEAD UTD 0-2 HATTERS
HATTERS 0-3 YEOVIL
BOREHAM WOOD 0-0 HATTERS
HATTERS 0-0 GRIMSBY
Head-to-Head
Weymouth did the double over The Hatters last season. In October 2020, The Terras travelled to Edgeley Park in a game which finished 2-1 to Weymouth, with goals from Calvin Brooks and Tom Whelan. The reverse fixture at the Bob Lucas Stadium saw Weymouth defeat Stockport by a goal to nil with Andy Dallas scoring the only goal of the game.
Final word
A tough test for The Terras at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday as they look to bounce back from defeat to Barnet last weekend. However, Brian Stock’s side will have to be on top of their game against a Stockport side looking to kick on and record back-to-back victories for the first time this season.
