Match Preview: Weymouth vs Torquay United – Saturday 4th December 2021 – 15:00

By Ted Slocombe

Weymouth are back in action this Saturday in the Vanarama National League as they face Torquay United at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

THE TERRAS

A narrow 3-2 defeat last time out for Brian Stock’s side in the National League as they faced Woking in Tuesday night action at the Bob Lucas Stadium on the 23rd November. Despite goals from Tyler Cordner and a late Andy Robinson goal for the Terras, it was a double from Tahvon Campbell and another from Rohan Ince that sealed the points for Woking. Given the fight the team showed in the game, especially in the second half, there will be confidence within the side that Saturday will be the day to get back to winning ways in the league to push further up the table.

Brian Stock on the performance against Woking: “We practically controlled the second half, when you look at the desire and the attitude and everything you want in a performance, that was certainly evident and on another day we would have got something out of the game”.

Looking ahead to Torquay United, Brian Stock said regarding team news: “Apart from Ahkeem Rose and Xander McBurnie who have left on loan, we have a fully fit squad to choose from, giving me a headache in terms of team selection.”

Stock on Torquay United: “They have some very good individuals, they were in the play-offs last year, they’ve been a bit unfortunate recently to be where they are in the league with the quality they possess in the team.”

Stock on Saturday’s game: “It’s an opportunity to impose our game plan on Torquay, it’s a game we’re looking to win. We’ll call upon the performance of the second half against Woking where I thought we showed a lot of composure on the ball and created a number of chances.”

Player To Watch: Tom Blair

A strong start to life as a Terra for Tom Blair who has been positive on the ball with his ability to take on and beat opponents and create chances for the forward line, receiving praise following the game against Woking from Brian Stock for his performance. But with the team in search of a first league win since the end of October, Tom could be one of the main outlets in attack to threaten the Torquay back line.

THE GULLS

Last season’s promotion play off finalists Torquay United have had a slow start to this season with the club sat at the wrong end of the table after 17 games. The Gulls, managed by Gary Johnson, have managed to pick up 7 points from their previous 6 league matches following their exit from the FA Cup after defeat to Havant & Waterlooville. Just five wins this season so far for Torquay United, notable victories include a 5-0 thrashing of Wealdstone and a 4-3 win over Maidenhead United. However, they find themselves heading into the game with the Terras this weekend following three consecutive defeats against Barnet, Aldershot and Halifax. The Gulls will certainly be looking at the fixture as a chance to change their luck in the league, but this is also an opportunity for the Terras to bounce back themselves, setting up what could be a tight clash at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday.

Player To Watch: Armani Little

With nine goals in the league so far this season, Armani Little will be the main dangerman in attack for The Gulls in the game on Saturday, someone The Terras defence will need to keep a close eye on. With Torquay United looking to get back to winning ways, they may rely on Little to demonstrate some of his finishing quality to help Gary Johnson’s side get points from the game.

In December 2020, it was a tightly contested 4-3 win for The Gulls, with Cody Cooke, Cameron Murray and skipper Josh McQuoid with a penalty on the scoresheet that day.
