Match Preview: Hemel Hempstead Town (H) – Saturday 3rd September 2022 – 15:00

The Terras return to the Bob Lucas Stadium this afternoon to take on Hemel Hempstead Town.

THE TERRAS

A much improved display on Bank Holiday Monday saw the Terras leave Bulpit Lane with their first point of the season, after a 1-1 draw with Hungerford Town. A superb volley from Tom Bearwish gave Weymouth the lead early on, before a second half header from Gyebi levelled the scores. Despite Hungerford going down to 10 men, Weymouth couldn’t quite find the winner, however they were satisfied that they were able to get a point on the board and have something to build on going into this afternoon. Given the momentum that the Terras should have behind their backs, there is optimism that David Oldfield’s side can end their pointless hoodoo at home so far this season and come away with a very positive result.

Player To Watch: Dan Gifford

After receiving his first start in a Terras shirt on Monday, Gifford, despite not scoring, was a dangerous presence in attack and will no doubt be looking to get on the scoresheet if selected again this afternoon.

THE TUDORS

Following a 15th placed finish last season in the National League South, it’s been a tricky start for Hemel Hempstead Town, picking up just one win from six games. They began the season well, with a 1-0 home win over Farnborough and a 1-1 away draw against Hampton and Richmond Borough. But the Tudors come into this afternoon’s match having lost four in a row against Braintree Town, Welling United, Dover Athletic and Dartford and failed to score in their previous two matches. The Tudors will be desperate to pick up points to get their season going again, and will eye today’s fixture, with the Terras’ similar misfortune in the league so far, as the perfect way to come away with a good result, something Weymouth will look to avoid once again at home this season.

Player To Watch: Jordan Greenidge

A familiar face in the squad for the Tudors, as ex-Terra striker Jordan Greenidge made the move to Hemel Hempstead following his release from Weymouth this summer. He has started the season off well with 3 goals and will certainly be eyeing the opportunity to score against his former club.

@TerraStatman’s Facts of the Match

Hemel park the bus?

Not quite a bogeyteam for us but certainly a team we have not always enjoyed facing aswe only have a P10 W4 D1 L5 record against the first-multi-storey-car-park-in-the-UK-based-outfit.

Hem-hell at home

Our overall record is patchy but our home record against the Tudors is even less regal! In four meetings we have just the one draw followed by three losses when we failed to rustle the onion bag!

Tu-dor 2-2

Our first meetings were in the Southern League in the 2010-11 season, a 2-1 win in Hertfordshire followed up by a 2-2 thriller at home, Reed and Beasley with the Terras goals. We went on to play today’s visitors another six times in the same league over the next three campaigns, with just the two wins and four losses with just one goal scored by the Terras in the quartet of defeats.

In 2013-14, Hemel departed the scene as they won the Southern League. We would next meet the Tudors in the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy in 2015/16, but that was sadly another loss, this time by the one goal. We did however seek revenge in our more recent match up in the National League South in January 2020, a scrambling 1-0 win away with Hemel putting into their own net in the 87th minute from a Wakefield cross. That result placed us third in the National League South, a position we were able to maintain until the end of the pandemic-truncated season in March, before the famous successful playoff run!

Tudor Terras!

The stellar list of known players who have turned out for both teams today is: Narada Barnard, Nathan Carlyle, Taofiq Olomowewe, Sean Shields.

Obviously we have just the one current player in Nathan Carlyle who is in the current Weymouth squad. Nathan joined permanently in the summer, after a loan spell last season. He featured in five games for Hemel, again on loan from the west London Championship
outfit, back in 2020/21. Shields and Olomowewe both played for the Terras last season. Sean was briefly on loan at Hemel from Ebbsfleet in 2016 and Taofiq starred for the Tudors in 2020, following a permanent transfer from Weymouth’s last opponents Hungerford Town. Both men now ply their trade in the Greater London area with Sean at Barnet and Taofiq at Welling.
