Francis Amartey Interview - Weymouth FC

I was convinced to join the club by Mark Molesley.

I’ve worked with him before, so he knows my game and he knows how to get the best out of me. He told me exactly what he had planned for me, which was important; at this stage in my career, I need to be playing as many games as possible.

In non-league football, there’s not a lot of security, so it’s important to be playing for someone who you know has your best interests at heart. I can’t wait to work with him once again.

I’ve joined a very good squad.

They’re all competitive, there’s a lot of competition for places, and the fitness levels are impressive, too. I’ve enjoyed settling in a team with this much quality. There’s at least two great players in every position.

This team is a group of players who all have the right attitude, which is important, as it creates a level of togetherness that can win games. We look to help each other on the pitch, but we all get on away from the pitch, too. It’s a tight-knit group.

Everyone is on the same page going forward.

We all have the same goals that we want to achieve. We’re all just helping each other reach their goals at the end of the day.

Training has been intense!

The first few sessions involved some tough long-distance running, before the sessions became more tactical.

But, it’s been good for us. The way Mark carries himself in training is excellent. He’s very clear with what he wants us to do. Now, we’re understanding our roles even more after our first few games.

I’ve always been a player who wants to score goals.

It’s also something that I’m able to do well when I play a consistent run of games, so I’m happy to have settled in the team as quickly as I have. That way, I can get into my rhythm and get myself going instantly. Hopefully, I can show the fans what I can do.

Being a forward, you have to enjoy pressure.

You know that the opposition is looking to stop you from doing it, so it’s important that your teammates can rely on you to be the one to put the ball in the back of the net. If the team isn’t playing well, I need to be the one to change the scoreline. Goals win games.

Last season was difficult for me.

I wasn’t playing as much as I would have liked, or in my preferred position, so it was harder for me to affect games like I should. But, now I’ve scored a few in pre-season, hopefully I can take that form into the new campaign.

This season is a point to prove.

I know that people will want to see if I can perform at a club as big as Weymouth. I’ve got to live in the present and look forward to being seen as someone who can score a lot of goals.

I’m excited to play in front of a full Weymouth crowd.

Fans have been turning up to our pre-season games, but I think they’ll be looking forward to seeing us in a more competitive setting. It’s not long away now!

We’re all confident going into our first game at Tonbridge.

We’ve trained well and we’ve had a good pre-season. We know our responsibilities and we’re a young, energetic team with a good mindset.

Here’s my message to the fans: I’m looking forward to entertaining you this season. I hope I can get you off your seats!
