Charlie Rowan’s 83rd-minute equaliser earned us a crucial point on Saturday in a 1-1 draw versus Chesham United at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
We were able to seize a point when Charlie bundled the ball beyond the line, after a double-save from Chesham goalkeeper Ben Goode.
The visitors had previously led for much of the game courtesy of Samson Esan’s 12th-minute strike.
Though the two teams had chances to walk away with all three points, they were ultimately forced to settle for a draw with both shot-stoppers arguably responsible for ensuring their side earned a point at all.
Another standout player on the pitch was newcomer Jaiden Bartolo, our 18-year-old loanee proving a handful for The General’s defence.
Saturday’s result caps off a respectable redemption following our FA-Cup exit away to Forest Green Rovers the previous week.
Importantly, whilst we remain bottom, we have now only lost one in our last four league games, a vital turnaround in form before tomorrow’s trip to Bath [19.45 BST].
Having not played on our turf in the league for nearly a month, and for over two weeks in all competitions, our players were finally back in front of a majority Weymouth crowd once again.
However any smiles from our set of supporters would be wiped away after just 12 minutes.
Mitchell Weiss managed to evade our press, even slide-tackling to keep the ball in the process, before finding Esan on the edge of the box.
The Chesham winger then stopped the ball dead in his tracks, curving beyond Will Buse to give his side an early 1-0 lead.
Our keeper could have done nothing about the shot, the ball swerving towards the far-right corner and bouncing off the inside of the post.
Our first major opportunity would come seven minutes later when Keelan O’Connell’s head met Tom Bearwish’s cross.
The headed strike, although accurate, was unable to fly beyond Goode who managed to catch the effort.
Then, just after the half-hour mark, Calvin Brooks sent in a low cross to Jaiden near the right byline.
Goode was able to deny Jaiden from close-range, before preventing Andreas Robinson the same way barely a second later.
Without the Chesham shot-stopper’s smart saves, we may have found ourselves level with just under 15 minutes of the first half remaining.
It was also the first of a few Jaiden chances, the youngster showing fans why he has already featured twice in League One for Wycombe Wanderers this season.
He would next threaten Goode once more five minutes before halftime, heading Ben Greenwood’s cross towards goal, albeit over the bar.
The forward had initially created the chance for himself, pouncing on a loose ball and forcing the visitors to clear only as far as Keelan, who laid the ball to Ben down the left-hand side.
Our increasing attack, though, was not quite enough to bring us level before the break.
While we ended the half with the better opportunities, the same could not be said as the second half ticked past the hour mark.
When Will kept out substitute Jack Connors’ thunderous under-the-wall free-kick in the 61st minute, this would be a sign for things to come.
Shortly after saw Chesham skipper Callum Adebiyi loop a header towards goal, forcing our keeper to push the ball to safety with both hands.
Then, in the 64th minute, Connors’ strike saw the ball deflect right into Nathan Minhas’ path, the flag staying down as the forward was right in front of goal.
However Will held firm, somehow clearing the ball away with his left foot.
Chesham’s next chance this time saw Minhas as the creator, threading a curving low ball towards Weiss, only for Will’s feet to save the day once again.
Though Weiss was flagged offside anyway, we would soon show something already seen from our team multiple times this season.
Our never-say-die attitude.
With seven minutes left of regular time, Jordan Maguire-Drew sent in a looping free-kick from the right towards the box.
What came next was a scrappy piece of play which resulted in two quick reaction saves from Goode.
However, lurking near the goal was Charlie, who perfectly pounced with a close-range header to bring us back into the game.
With the scoreline now 1-1, a possible winner existed for both sides as the second half ticked towards its final few minutes.
That much-needed goal very nearly came from Charlie once again just four minutes later, bringing down Calvin’s header inside the box, before spinning to shoot just wide.
Soon enough the game was now in stoppage time, the six additional minutes being enough for just one more roll of the dice, which we may have seen had it not been for Goode’s heroics.
Jaiden swung in a Beckham-like cross from the left towards Ben’s head, which could only direct the ball into Goode’s path.
Still, the Chesham keeper did well to keep out the powerful effort from close-range.
But neither side would clinch a winner as they ultimately shared the points.
