Ahead of tonight’s trip to the capital, we sat down with Warren Feeney, who spoke to us about the importance of being dangerous in attack, our approach to this “tricky” month, and much more…

On our FA-Trophy performance:

It could have been difficult for some of the lads coming into the line-up, but I thought they were excellent. Boreham Wood started very well, but we more than held our own and soon enough we started creating our own chances. I was very pleased with the way we played and, even though it ended in defeat, it gives us confidence going into some tricky games this month.

On developing attacking threat:

As I’ve said to the team before, if we put balls into the box we’ll make people defend, and that’s what we have to do. The hardest job in football is scoring a goal, but it will be made slightly easier if we keep getting balls into positions that leave defences on the back foot. There’s no right or wrong way to score, but let’s unsettle defences as teams have done to us.

On Keelan O’Connell:

He can be important for us this season. He’s a good player and he showed his quality on Saturday. He’s given me food for thought with how I want my teams to look.

All of the players who came into the team on Saturday played very well and it’s given me a good headache going forward.

On our approach for this month’s fixtures:

This is a big month waiting ahead of us but we can’t look too far ahead; we have to focus on tonight’s match before anything else. We’re fighting for our lives and Welling are one of the teams not too far above us, but we can’t let emotions get the better of us. We just have to get out there and play our own game and look forward to a game of football. People are writing us off, so the pressure is on Welling United.

On Welling United:

I have a lot of respect for them, I’ve managed there, but I can’t get too caught up in the opposition. I’m here to do a job for Weymouth and although they’ll have their own game plan, so will we. Hopefully we’ll come away with the right result, but this is one big game in a very big month for us.

On preparation during a busy month:

It’s tough if you’re a part-time football player because you still have your jobs outside of the game, but this is a lease of life for them. They will come out of work and enjoy playing in the evening. That’s the mentality they need to have. I’d have given a right arm to play and I know my team feels the same.

Having said that, I’m a big believer in training. If you’re physically fit, then you’re mentally fit.

On keeping up squad fitness:

It’s harder to do it midway through a season compared to pre-season, where you have more time to work on things. Now, it’s just about getting in little bits on the training ground whilst getting the mindset right to help build up fitness.

On key messages to the players:

It’s just another game. You can’t get caught up in it. We just have to worry about ourselves, play the right game and see where we go.
