As we look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon, Warren Feeney laid out the important things we need to do in games, why he enjoys facing sides like Dorking Wanderers, and much more…
On Tuesday’s result:
I was disappointed. I thought we started very well but, as I said to the boys after full-time, we’ve got to make sure we have a strong mentality. It was annoying to concede from a set piece because it’s the exact same thing that happened against Torquay United.
On being able to respond to setbacks in games:
Football is a 90-minute game and you have to be ready for whatever is thrown at you. As I said after the final whistle, we started really well but then we gave away a stupid goal which put us on the back foot. We started well again in the second half but then they scored with their first attack. This is down to confidence and, as I said to the players, we can’t have a soft underbelly. We can’t be on top and then give away stupid goals.
On learning to “play the game”:
These players are a good bunch, I mean that, but they can be too honest. I’ll never encourage them to cheat but sometimes they need to play the game. With Mal in the second half, if he goes down after being clipped we’re given a foul in our favour and Welling are handed a red card. It’s a stonewall decision. We’ve got to learn to be nasty, because otherwise teams will do it to us.
On injuries to our squad:
There’s going to be a few players out for a while, to be honest, and to lose two players in one evening was a big blow for us. But, we have to move forward as quickly as we can and be positive.
On bouncing back tomorrow afternoon:
It’s going to be difficult, because we have a lot of tough fixtures coming up, but I actually prefer these games because we seem to do better against tougher opposition. There’s still a long season ahead of us, but we have to make sure that we have belief in ourselves to get out of the situation we’re in. We’re trying to bring in a couple of additions to our squad which will hopefully give us an extra boost.
On Dorking Wanderers:
They’re a good club and what Marc White has done is phenomenal. He’s as honest as they come and that’s what I love about him. They’ve had a lot of good players at the club throughout their history who I’ve coached. We know we’ll be up against tough opposition, but we can only worry about ourselves. We know where we are and we know what we have to do. All we can do is get our heads down, work hard and hopefully get the right result.
On our fans:
They’ve been brilliant since I’ve come in. The ground staff, The Monday Club, everyone has been outstanding, and that’s what it will take to get us off the bottom. Everyone being together.
