Ahead of tomorrow’s huge clash at home to Slough Town, we spoke to Warren Feeney about Tuesday’s cup win, the need for young players in the squad, and more…
On Tuesday’s Dorset Senior Cup victory:
Cups are about winning, and that’s what we’ve done. It’s been a very tough season, so it’s nice to get something into the trophy cabinet. Hopefully now, we can move, head in the right direction, and start to give the fans something to smile about.
On the inclusion of younger players:
I’m not scared to throw young boys into the team. I’m a big believer in moving forward together with a strong academy. Football is all about turning negatives into positives and with a group of good young players, that we can get involved with the senior team, that will help us rebuild. Going forward, I’m excited to get them even sharper with a full pre-season.
On performing with the pressure of being favourites:
The pressure was 100 per cent on us. Everyone expected us to win, but people raise their levels in matches like these. I told the players that they need to handle that type of pressure – thankfully, they came out on top.
On how the cup win will boost our team:
Cups are there to be won, and winning one will improve their mentality. You look at the German mentality, their main goal is to win at all costs, and that’s why they’re so successful. That’s the mentality I want my team to have – it’s how I was brought up. I hate losing.
On preparation ahead of tomorrow’s game:
Preparation has been good. We need to see who is fit, but the boys are ready for tomorrow, which is how we need to be when we’re up against a team like Slough. They’re an excellent team led by Scott Davies and they have no fear in them. They’ll be on their a-game.
On if there have been discussions over the implications of a negative result:
We’re not thinking about that right now. All we have to do is worry about ourselves. We go into every game wanting to win, and tomorrow will be no different. We want to finish the season as strongly as possible.
