Sholing 3 – 2 Weymouth
A red card for Sholing followed by a penalty for Weymouth in the 25th minute gave the Terras an early advantage, ending the first half ahead with an excellent header from Reid in the 41st minute. But it was a tactical substitution for Sholing in the 80th minute that brought them two goals in quick succession. Weymouth were unable to recover and Sholing’s ten men took all the points.
FIRST HALF
Following several injuries at their away game win to Plymouth Parkway the Terra’s entered the pitch without Bearwish and Burrows. The Terras started the game playing right to left in their luminous yellow shirts and black shorts, starting with a 4-3-3 formation. McNearny captained the side for the game, and it was the Terras who got the game away.
The Terras started off well and showed composure, and there was an early chance at goal in the 4th minute for Goodship, who went one one-on-one with the goalkeeper, taking a shot with his left foot. Sholing’s Taylor was able to block the shot away, giving Weymouth their first corner of the game from the left-hand side. The corner was taken and it went out to the edge of the area and bounced into the net, but an early goal for the Terras was ruled out as a foul.
A second corner in the 10th minute, delivered by Carson from the right, the ball went towards the back post and McCarthy won the header but it went over the byline and was cleared away by Sholing for a goal kick.
The hosts started to show some pace after Weymouth dominated the first 10 minutes of the game, taking a chance on goal with a drill of the ball across the face of goal. Douglas put the ball behind the goal giving Sholing their first corner in the 13th minute, taken from the right-hand side. The corner was taken giving a free header from McCarthy, but it was picked up by Wiley deep in the penalty area giving Dan Mason an early goal in the 12th minute for the Boatmen
The Terras responded minutes later when Carson took a shot on goal, but some excellent defence from Taylor stopped them from levelling. Weymouth continued to press, appearing to respond well at being behind.
A dangerous free kick only a yard and half outside the 18-yard box was awarded to Weymouth following Carson being pulled down. A right-footed shot was taken by Hanger towards goal but Sholing’s Taylor swotted the ball away taking it back out into play.
A third Weymouth corner was awarded in the 20th minute from the right hand side taken by Carson, shooting it towards goal but Sholing’s goalkeeper got a hand to it ahead of McCarthy, giving a fourth Weymouth corner from the left hand side.
Weymouth took the corner and the ball was headed away by Sholing, giving a throw in to Weymouth. Both Goodship and Robinson tried to take advantage, but the ball went loose, eventually giving Weymouth a free kick around the halfway mark.
Weymouth playing the ball long, a Sholing player tried to clear it away but it went up and over, giving Weymouth a fifth corner from the right hand side. Carson took the corner in towards the six yard box, but the goal keeper dropped it and it was a hand ball by Sholings Harry Taylor, giving Weymouth a penalty kick and costing Sholing a red card.
Before Weymouth had their chance to take the penalty, Sholing were quick to prepare for a substitution in response to going down to 10 men. The penalty shot was taken by McCarthy on the 25th minute, shooting the ball into the back of the net with his right foot, levelling the score for the Terras.
The home side responded with two substitutions, taking Lopes off making way for Rabbetts to come on in the 26th minute. Then less than 10 minutes later Folivi came off for Crichlow to come on, Sholing making changes in an attempt to respond to being down to 10 men.
There was a sixth corner for Weymouth in the 26th minute with Weymouth taking it short, playing the ball quickly and putting the pressure on Sholing’s.
It was a half full of corners for Weymouth, with a seventh corner in the 35th minute, but it was more excellent goal keeping from King who stopped Weymouth from getting ahead. Weymouth continued to press on, and another Weymouth corner from the right hand side saw the ball shot in towards the box, but it was yet another excellent save from King.
It was Reid with a free header in the 41st minute that took the Terras ahead, giving him his first goal for Weymouth.
Sholing lost control of the ball in the final moments of the half, giving Goodship another chance on goal but a brilliant save to the right hand side stopped Weymouth extending their lead, giving them another corner.
It was an entertaining first half, and Sholing responded well to going down to ten men but Weymouth went into the break with the lead.
SECOND HALF
Heading into the second half it was a good start for Sholing, despite giving an early free kick to the Terras. Sholing quickly responded with an early chance on goal following Douglas losing the ball, but Clark was able to save it and Weymouth retained their lead.
Oakley Hanger received the first booking of the game with a yellow card in the 54th minute after trying to cross into the ball but falling short and he goes through a Sholing player.
Sholing were awarded a corner following an opportunity on goal, drilling in towards the goal, but Clark cleared it away. Sholing showed composure in the second half and Weymouth were struggling to gain control with another corner quickly awarded to the home side.
Reid went down and received treatment, marking the Terras first substitution of the match and he comes off to give a debut for Sneap in the 59th minute. Sholing takes a poor corner but the clearance from Hanger gave them a fourth corner of the second half. It floated back towards the back post but was eventually cleared away.
Weymouth eventually get a free kick and took a long ball, looking like they may regain some momentum but Sholing regained control with a free kick of their own from 15 yards inside their own half.
Sholing made a double substitution, bringing on Booth to replace Hesketh in the 64th minute and then Spurway comes on to replace Wishart around the 65th minute. A free kick to the Terras was cleared by Clark, heading it up field but Sholing released the ball down the left hand side, it getting knocked out of play by Douglas giving a thrown in to Sholing who took the advantage with another chance on goal.
Weymouth received a second booking in the 67th minute and soon after some high balls and poor control gave away another chance for Sholing to equalize. Goodship did well to get into the penalty box with a chance to further their lead, drilling it across the 6 yard box but there was no Weymouth player able to get on the end of it. Weymouth showed some improvement as the second half went on but Sholing continued to ask questions and the ten men Sholing were clearly putting pressure on the Terras with 19 minutes left on the clock.
Weymouth took an opportunity when Hanger, a yard in from the touch line, sent the ball in and McNearey had a chance with a header which came off the post, but the flag went up with McNearey being deemed off side. Goodship soon followed up with a shot that hit the crossbar and takes a deflection, giving Weymouth their tenth corner of the game.
The Hampshire outfit made a tactical substitution bringing Tume on the pitch for Crichlow and Weymouth bringing on Gyebi for Hewlett moments later. But it all took a dramatic turn following a Sholing free kick and in the 82nd minute when Sholing levelled with a goal from Wylie who took a left footed strike from the edge of the penalty area.
With seven minutes left to go, Weymouth were unable to regain their composure and Sholing responded with another goal from a dangerous free kick in the 85th minute the Captain Mason getting a header into the net, taking the home side into the lead.
The Terras showed some press and urgency, with Gyebi taking the ball into the area and tried to send the ball towards Hanger but he couldn’t quite get on the end of it. Weymouth started to show some urgency in the final moments of the game but were unable to find the goal they needed.
There were seven minutes of injury time added on and Weymouth were trying to find a goal to level and share the points, but Sholing had clear control of the game in the second half.
Despite a well played first half for Weymouth, Sholing came out in the second half clearly taking control of game, with the Terras leaving Hampshire empty handed.
