We’ve only played the one game against this outfit* and that was just two months ago, also in the Southern Premier League.
*We did play a “Walton” in this league in 2018/19, but that was Walton Casuals, a different club from the same town who sadly went bust a short while later.
That occasion was a day to forget for the Terras in leafy Surrey as the Swans gracefully glided to a 4-0 victory. Weymouth were two goals down at the break and, although rallying in the second half, the visitors added two more feathers in their cap with another two goals in the last ten minutes of normal time.
Whether Walton will pose a similar threat this weekend remains to be seen, but their position at the top of the table and their forward trio of Rogalski, Powell & Wood, boasting 46 goals between them in the league, suggests that will be the case!
However, the Terras have been known to upset the apple cart earlier this season against a Surrey team when they returned from Farnham with all three points, thus ending their very long unbeaten run!
There could well be a couple of familiar faces in the Swans lineup this Saturday as striker Francis Amartey and midfielder Elliott Bolton. The former played for the Terras in the 2024/25 campaign in 7 competitive games, starting 3 and not troubling the scorers. The latter featured in 13 games in the 2023/24 season.
If any of the Terras faithful are looking for good omens today they can certainly point towards our fantastic record at home on this day in history. Of the 11 games played on 17th January in years gone by the team has amassed 7 wins and 3 draws with just the 1 loss way back in 1908 against local rivals Whiteheads, a club founded as a works team for the torpedo factory at Ferrybridge.
Just one birthday of note found today – a certain Roy McCarthy who more venerable fans may remember from a two-season stint in the early 1970’s. Having made his name at Barrow and Barnsley, the Irishman joined the Terras before eventually returning ‘oop north for a second stint at Barrow.
Can The Terras clip the Swans wings?…
