Terras cut down Bluebells to continue winning run
Summary:
An away day victory in Gloucestershire gave Weymouth their third consecutive win in the league to move clear of the relegation zone. Robinson headed home from Swann’s cross within the first minute of the game and Brooks doubled the lead from Burrows’ corner after 27 minutes. This was enough to secure the win, but unfortunately the result will be overshadowed by crowd trouble that saw the game delayed by an hour.
Match Report:
With the Terras enjoying a good run of form, Jamie Wells chose to stick largely with the same team that started the previous week, with just one change being forced on him. Matt Carson having been recalled from his loan spell by Torquay United, his place at left back was taken up by Hutchinson, which made room for Ben Moss to return to the bench.
And the game could not have got off to a better start for Weymouth, who found themselves ahead with just 39 seconds on the clock. Great work from Swann down the right wing saw him beat his defender to the byline and deliver a searching cross which was met by a diving header from Robinson to power his team into the lead.
Unfortunately a disturbance in the crowd had started at the other end of the field just before the goal went in, and the referee was unable to restart the game until this had been dealt with. A full hour passed during which the players left the pitch, the police were called and the rival fans were separated before the game could finally resume at 4 o’clock.
Once the game was back underway, the Terras picked up where they had left off, driving forward and putting Yate under pressure. Swann had a great chance to double their lead after 25 minutes when he ran clear of the home defence with just the keeper to beat, but lifted his shot over the bar. But the travelling fans only had to wait a couple more minutes before the second goal came, with Brooks rising above three defenders to head home a corner from Burrows.
Weymouth were now firmly in control of the game and, despite Yate having more of the ball in the second half, the Terras were mostly able to keep them at arm’s length. Evans was called on to save from Jackson, but had little else to do, and the game rather fizzled out after a series of substitutions midway through the half. By the time the referee blew the final whistle the ground was already half empty, it was getting close to 6 o’clock and the low sun was casting long shadows across the pitch.
The team had done a very professional job on the pitch, putting aside all the distractions to deliver a fourth consecutive win in all competitions, scoring 12 goals and keeping 4 clean sheets in the process. It is just a shame that the result will be overshadowed by the events that unfolded off the field at the start of the game.
Reaction:
Speaking to Air Dorset after the game, Jamie Wells declared himself “very happy with the recent run of games … still got a bit to do to the end of the season, but we’re certainly heading in the right direction and doing what we need to do”. Asked about taking the early lead, he said “we started on the front foot and set the tone for the rest of the game … the work rate, work levels across the group is immense”. Looking forward to the games head, Jamie added “when you’ve got confidence and a good run of form on your side, we don’t fear anyone”.
This win sees Weymouth move up to 15th place in the table, three points clear of the relegation zone with six games left to play. Next up the Terras welcome play-off chasing Sholing to the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday, before more big games against Bracknell and Dorchester over the Easter weekend.
