Mark Molesley says Weymouth’s impressive display against Taunton Town in the FA Trophy was ‘a great away performance’.
Brandon Goodship opened the scoring for the Terras before Stephane Zubar put Weymouth 2-0 ahead. Josh Wakefield not only sealed the victory with the third goal, but a man of the match performance which bagged him the October Player of the Month.
Speaking to theterras.com after the match, Mark Molesley said that Weymouth had even more chances to score which they didn’t take. “I thought the boys did really well,” he said. “I thought we dominated large spells of the game. I think it can always be an awkward score-line, we went 2-0 up and had chances to put it to bed, which we didn’t.”
Taunton Town managed to pull themselves back into the game when Ashley Wells was taken off with a knock and Matt Wright scored to make it 2-1.
Molesley said that conceding took some of the gloss off the victory. “Unfortunately Ashley Wells had to come off with an injury, so we lost a defender and had to make a substitution, and we didn’t quite get ourselves organised for that set-piece and conceded. It’s a shame because it took a little bit of the gloss off it, our defenders and goalkeepers want a clean sheet collectively, so that was the only downside.
“We’ve picked up a couple of knocks and conceded a goal, but other than that it was a great away performance.”
When asked about Brandon Goodship reaching his 50-goal milestone for the club, Molesley said that the striker gives the rest of the squad a ‘reason to work hard’.
“It is some record, I think the Weymouth fans should be delighted they have a player wearing their badge, wearing their shirt week-in-week-out, a goal-scorer like that should be celebrated and held in the highest regard. The record speaks for itself.
“I think Goodship would be the first to admit that it is a team game, and the rest of the boys work hard for him; but he always gives the boys a reason to work hard, because if you give him a chance he will take it.”
Weymouth are next in action when they travel to Basingstoke Town in the league on Saturday. Molesley said that the Dragons are a side he has a lot of respect for.
“It will be a really tough game. Basingstoke are a tough cookie, I have the utmost respect for the management team they have there. They play the game in a similar way, they like to play the right way and their around the playoffs so they are competitors to us.
“We’ll have to prepare well, dust the boys down and get ready for next Saturday.”
