Mark Molesley believes that New Year’s Day’s draw with Poole Town wasn’t a ‘Weymouth performance.’
The Terras found themselves pegged back twice after taking the lead through Brandon Goodship and then Calvin Brooks.
The draw came after Weymouth had earned an impressive point at Taunton and a last-gasp victory in the Ridgeway derby at Dorchester Town.
Terras boss, Molesley admitted that he felt his side weren’t at their best and strayed away from the way their usual brand of football.
Speaking to theterras.com Molesley said, “I’ve got to be honest, I didn’t enjoy our performance against Poole at all. We came out of the way which we usually do things, fair play to Poole in that they made it tough and difficult for us.
“It was scrappy and I think we followed suit, we didn’t play the football we usually play. We weren’t as fluid as we have been, although I’m disappointed that we haven’t won; we missed three one-on-ones and hit the crossbar.
“So, despite us not being at our best or not quite being our fluid selves, we’ve had chances to win that game. I’m disappointed we haven’t won and disappointed by the fashion which we played, it wasn’t a Weymouth performance.”
The fixture was the third game in just under week in a hectic period in the Evo-Stik South Premier South schedule.
Weymouth went into the game with Stephane Zubar missing through suspension as well as Jordan Ngalo unavailable and the continued long term injuries to Warren Bentley and Josh McQuoid. Lloyd Thomas continued to play in goal after Jordan Seabright announced he was leaving after the Dorchester Town game.
“There has been a lot of football and we looked a little jaded out there,” Molesley continued. “We have a certain way of playing and I think we came away from that.”
There was controversy when Poole Town captain Will Spetch made a two footed tackle on Jake McCarthy in the second-half, despite Spetch having been booked in the first-half, the experience centre-back remained on the pitch.
“We didn’t quite get the rub of the green on a few things, I had to speak to the referee about a couple of the decisions,” said Molesley. “How they managed to finish the game with ten men on the pitch, I have to wonder why.
“You don’t want to see anybody get sent off and you aren’t asking for bookings but a two footed tackle is outlawed in the game now.
“We all know that it is a straight red, he was already on a booking and then he still didn’t get one. We can’t control that, we can only do what we can do with our own camp and we weren’t good enough.
“We can’t control the referee and we can’t control Poole Town, they made it really difficult for us, but we can control ourselves and we didn’t play anywhere near what we’re capable of.
“At the same time, we created more than enough chances to win that game, so it makes it doubly frustrating because we didn’t have the performance or the result that we wanted.”
There was a big appeal for a penalty in the second-half when Calvin Brooks had looked to have got inside the Poole Town defence, only to be pushed to the ground.
“The Calvin penalty appeal was quite far away from me, but he’s obviously got inside his man. I don’t know how much contact was there, but their guy didn’t touch the ball and Calvin’s on the floor. He’s either got to book him for diving or give the penalty there, the referee did neither so you’d have to speak to him about that.”
Fortunately for the Terras League leaders Taunton Town were defeated 3-1 by Merthyr Town on New Year’s Day, with chasing Salisbury picking up a 1-0 win at home to Frome Town.
“It’s disappointing to draw but good that Taunton didn’t win as well, if anything it is a point gained on them, it’s made the chasing pack a little bit tighter and things are getting interesting!”
