WEYMOUTH director of football Paul Maitland wanted to make sure he was not superfluous to requirements prior to taking up his role.
Maitland agreed to become the Terras’ interim director of football in August following the departure of previous boss and close friend Mark Molesley to Southend United.
Maitland’s temporary stint came after stepping away from his incumbent position in January.
After consultation with Weymouth’s board and new manager Brian Stock, Maitland was finally able to commit his services.
He told Echosport: “At the time, the club needed to appoint a new manager and I needed to understand whether he wanted to work with a director of football.
“And whether the club wanted me to carry on in that role. The general consensus from the chairman (Ian White) was that he wanted me to stay.
“You don’t want to stay in a role where you’re not really wanted. I wanted to make sure I wasn’t outstaying my welcome.”
He added: “I’m a couple of weeks in now with Brian and I’m getting to know him.
“I’m looking forward to it, he’s an interesting character. He’s got his own ways and I think it will be a good journey with him and the staff he’s put together.
“I was obviously keen to stay involved with the club. To have got it this far, it felt a shame not to go and follow it through into the National League.”
Weymouth entertain King’s Lynn Town at home today (3pm).
