Dorset Women’s County Cup 1st Round (19/11/23)

Weymouth avoided a potential banana skin as they eased past Dorset league side Bournemouth Manor to book their place in the second round of the county cup.

The Terras welcomed Issy Heybourne back into the side for her first game between the sticks this season after an injury lay-off. In other changes to last week’s starting XI, Emily Screen and Gracie Billing replaced Lauren Ellis and Charlie Wilson – both of whom started on the bench.

The heavy rain over most of the last week made for an understandably tricky surface which both sids initially seemed to struggle to get to grips with.

The Terras soon began to get into a rythem though, with Lucy Roberts proving to be their main threat down the wing. Having put in a couple of crosses early on, she made the breakthrough herself on 15 minutes when she won the ball in the channel, raced down the wing, before cutting in and beating the goalkeeper at her near post.

It should’ve been 2-0 3 minutes later when Screen latched onto Redding’s through ball, but she fired wide one v one with the goalkeeper.

But the second goal for Weymouth did arrive on 24 minutes when Clark was sent down the right flank by Billing, and she fired the ball across the face of goal and in off the post.

Bournemouth Manor had their first effort of the match a couple of minutes later but the shot from the edge of the D was not troubling Heybourne.

Roberts then struck the crossbar with a free kick, but a minute later she provided the assist for Weymouth’s third goal, and what a finish it was! Ellia Webb’s deep cross was kept alive by Roberts at the back post. She headed it back across the box and Emily Screen hooked it into the far corner of the net with an audacious overhead kick. Without a doubt the goal of the game.

Screen nearly had her second of the afternoon on 37 minutes when she tried to curl one in from the edge of the D but it drifted just wide of the mark.

On 40 minutes Annie Redding was tripped in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Redding duly convrted the spot kick herself to make it 4-0. And within a matter of seconds the ball was in the net again as from the start, Screen charged down a defender, ran through and coolly rolled the ball past the goalkeeper to send the Terras into the break 5 to the good.

They only had to wait 4 minutes of the second half to add to their tally, when Roberts’ corner was flicked on by Wilson and fell for Redding to rifle home.

Weymouth naturally eased off the gas a little bit and the game would become a little scrappy for a period. To their credit, Bournemouth Manor kept pushing forwards and on a couple of occasions they looked like they’d managed to get in behind the defence, but Potter was on hand to make a couple of excellent challenges to thwart any danger.

Ruby Clark should’ve had her second of the day on 64 minutes when she was played in by Ellis, but the goalkeeper made an excellent one v one save, before 3 minutes later, Heybourne was called into action at the other end as she held onto an awkward dipping shot from range.

Clark then saw another one on one shot well saved by the goalkeeper, before Weymouth managed to miss a real sitter on 71 minutes. Screen rounded the goalkeeper and rolled it towards the goal, but the ball struck the post and bounced back out for Webb who somehow blazed the ball over the bar from barely a couple of yards out.

On 77 minutes, Redding completed her hat-trick when Roberts sent her away down the left channel. She had options in the middle but went all the way herself and slotted home to make it 7-0.

Emily Screen then completed her-hatrick in the 86th minute when she ran onto Wilson’s ball through the centre and made no mistake one on one with the goalkeeper, before Redding added her fourth of a prosperous afternoon bang on full tiime to seal Weymouth’s safe passage into the next round of the cup, where they’ll travel to Sherborne Town on 21st January.

The Terras’ first team will enjoy a week off next week before returning to league action with a trip to league leaders Poole Town on 3rd December.

Weymouth’s Development team were also in cup action and suffered a 10-0 reverse at Dorset league leaders Wimborne Town. They travel to Blandford United in the Dorset league next Sunday.
