Terras hit Hungerford for four to move out of relegation zone
Summary:
Weymouth continued their resurgence with a second consecutive four-goal victory over a relegation rival. Reuben Ried set the tone with a brace in the first-half as the Terras dominated proceedings, and their task was made that bit easier early in the second half when their visitors were reduced to ten men. Further goals from Goodship and Burrows sealed the win to secure another vital three points in their quest to avoid the drop.
Match Report:
Several of the squad players put in good performances during the Senior Cup Final victory over Dorchester during the week, but manager Jamie Wells opted to make just a single change from the team that had won comfortably at Tiverton in their previous league game. This change saw Hutchinson drop to the bench with Pollock brought into the middle of defence in his place.
Attacking the Windowman Stand end in the first-half, Reid opened the scoring within 8 minutes of the start when he turned in Swann’s cross after some great work down the right wing. The Terras seemed to be overwhelming their visitors in the early exchanges. Carson hit a long-range effort over the bar, and Bearwish headed wide from Burrows’ cross before the lead was doubled just after the half hour mark. Betts picked up the ball 40-yards out and drove into the penalty area, past five opposition players, before Reid took the ball of his toe to fire in his second goal of the game.
Weymouth nearly had a third before half-time when Reid sent Swann through on goal, but the Hungerford keeper was able to block the winger’s shot with his outstretched foot. There was another great chance to extend the lead just after the interval when Burrows broke free from the halfway line and raced into the box to shoot from a tight angle, but again Cairney saved with his feet.
Ten minutes into the second half, the task was made easier for Weymouth when Tooze was dismissed for a second yellow card after catching Carson in the face with his hand – he had picked up his first card early in the game for leaving his foot in on Evans.
The Terras responded immediately by extending their lead – Swann making headway down the right wing again delivered a deep cross which Goodship met with a crisp first-time volley to score his 12th league goal of the campaign.
Reid had a chance to seal his hattrick after 67 minutes when he met another cross from Swann at the near post, but this time his side-footed effort went straight at Cairney. Five minutes later Hungerford had their best chance to score when Conteh found himself with only Evans to beat, but the Weymouth keeper stood his ground and held on to the shot well.
The victory was wrapped up 7 minutes from time, when Burrows stole the ball off Marcon in the Hungerford box and finished from a seemingly impossible angle to score his third goal in three league games.
Reaction:
Speaking to Radio Terras after the game, Jamie Wells was “very pleased” with the result. Commenting on the performance of Reuben Ried, he said “he is an excellent pro, he gives everything and I was really pleased for him to get two goals today for his hard work”. And regarding team selection, he added “I’m in a position now where we’ve got a full squad and I’ve got to make tough decisions … ultimately I’ve got to pick the team that I think can win the game, and today we’ve had a clean sheet and scored four goals”. With more tough games to come in this relegation battle, Jamie said his team should “concentrate on ourselves, do what we can do … as long as we do that we’ll be OK”.
This win sees Weymouth leapfrog Hungerford to move out of the relegation zone – now sitting in 17th place, one point clear of danger. But it is looking very tight down there, with just 2 points separating the teams in 14th and 19th positions. Next up is another relegation 6-pointer as the Terras visit 20th placed Yate Town to try and open up a gap from the teams below them.
