WEYMOUTH have been hit by another injury blow to playmaker Chris Shephard, as boss Jason Matthews revealed he is set to go for a scan on his hamstring.
The former Exeter City man, who picked up the problem and had to be replaced in the first half against Brimscombe & Thrupp on Saturday, could be out for three or four weeks, according to the player-manager.
That means Shephard will miss Saturday’s tricky trip to Hitchin Town (3pm) and is also highly unlikely to feature Weymouth’s FA Cup fourth qualifying round against Kidderminster Harriers next week.
Matthews told Echosport: “Sheps will be going for a scan to determine the degree of his hamstring injury.
“It’s part and parcel of football but it’s really frustrating.”
He added: “But I feel we have a little bit extra in the squad this year to cope with it. It is up to the others to step up to the plate.
“We have some very good wingers at the club. Rodders (Aaron Rodriguez) and Smicker (Dan Smith) have done extremely well this season.”
Rodriguez is also still nursing a back injury and is expected to be monitored ahead of this weekend’s clash.
Stewart Yetton, who scored a hat-trick in the cup last weekend, also has a minor heel problem, but Matthews expects his captain to be fit.
Looking ahead to the game against Hitchin, who currently sit fifth in the league table, Matthews added: “They did the double over us last year and were a really good side. They have some threats throughout their team and the league is very close this year.
“We have had some really good results on the road so far and there is no reason why we can’t go to Hitchin and get something.”
