JASON Matthews praised referee Lee Roberts for making the right call after the Terras’ FA Cup clash with Paulton Rovers was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch with the game all square at 1-1.
After torrential rain, the official made the decision in the 51st minute with the ball unable to roll on the sodden surface.
Speaking about the postponement, Matthews said: “There was a lot of standing water on the pitch.
“The referee called it off, which was a shame because I thought we were magnificent.
“The first 30 minutes we played our best football of the season.”
He added: “The rain was a great leveller and, from my point of view, I can’t have any complaints about the referee’s decision.
“We have to look after the player’s safety first and foremost and the referee has taken that decision.”
The sides will meet again tomorrow night (7.45pm) at the Bob Lucas Stadium to decide who goes into the second qualifying round of the competition.
The draw for that takes place today and Matthews is confident, having got to grips with the Rovers, that his Weymouth side will come out on top.
“We have to go about it in the right way tomorrow.
“The lads have seen what Paulton are about now and if we put in a decent performance then we will be in the next round.”
“If we have a good run then I know the chairman will let me strengthen the squad further.”
