DETERMINED Weymouth striker Stewart Yetton is eager to rekindle his lethal touch in front of goal to help fire the Terras to promotion this term.
The former Plymouth Argyle and Truro City man, 31, admitted that last season was “not a good year for me” as part of a Terras’ squad that failed to land a play-off spot last season.
Yetton admits he can “take the blame” for a campaign in which he feels he was not at his best but, ever the competitor, he is eager to put things right and has set himself a target of 25 goals for the upcoming campaign.
“Last year was not a good year for me, so let’s pull no punches about that, for a mixture of reasons,” he told Echosport.
“I have big enough shoulders to take the blame for that, you have to look at yourself, go away, work hard and try and do a few different things.
“I feel like I owe the club, Jase (Matthews, manager), and the chairman (Chris Pugsley), more this year.
“I know if I am fully fit and firing there isn’t any reason that I should not be scoring goals in the team.”
He added: “I’d like to think this year I can give the team and the squad a lot more.
“In pre-season I feel like I have done well, played well, and got some nice feedback from the coaches off the pitch.
“It’s a long old season so the key for me is keeping myself in good shape through the winter months and the fact that, now we have a lot of quality and challenges for places, it is going to be difficult to start.
“Realistically, this year, with the players and the squad we have, I am not sure that anyone is going to run away and score 35 goals this year. I’m not quite sure we are that team anymore.
“I’d like to score 25 goals if we are going to set a target. You have to be realistic and say 25 is a target if you are starting 40-45 games (in league and cup).
“It depends how many games you are going to start and what formation and style of play Jase is going to go with.
“The main target for me is being part of the club that gets promoted.”
And, with an abundance of creative talent around him, including the return of winger Dan Smith, Yetton is fully aware that the Terras’ should not be short of quality in the final third.
“You need to be a team where goals go in all over the pitch,” he claimed.
“We have added more goals into the squad in the sense of adding Sammy (Jordan) and Smicks (Smith).
“Smicks has been around this sort of level for quite a few years and he is a very talented player. I was at Argyle with him, he was a couple of years younger than me but he has always had a lot of talent.
“I know he is really pleased that he is here and he has wanted to come back for a couple of years. Playing in a team like ours will suit him.
“He has been around a lot of clubs where he has always been the luxury player. He has even said in the car because we travel together that it’s nice not to feel the constant pressure that it always needs to come through him here.
“The squad we have is going to take that little bit of pressure off him and I think his performances have been really good.”
