Notts County end Terras unbeaten run
NOTTS COUNTY 1
Report: Alfie Lumb
Weymouth’s two game unbeaten run was brought to an end on Saturday, losing 1-0 to Notts County at a windy Bob Lucas Stadium.
Brian Stock named an unchanged side for the game. A team in form winning the previous two games against Hartlepool United and Aldershot Town. The Terras keeping two clean sheets in the process.
Despite the Terras putting early set pieces in dangerous places, it was the visitors who had the first chance on goal. Dutch winger Enzio Boldewijn turned Ollie Harfield with some neat footwork inside the area before flashing a shot across goal with his left boot. The ball went wide past Ethan Ross’ right post.
The Magpies had their first shot on target in the 17th minute. Boldewijn was held up by both Dominic Revan and Jacob Mensah outside the box. The winger laid the ball off to Kyle Wooton. The striker hit the ball first time with power. The ball was in a central position allowing Ross to palm the powerful strike over the bar for a corner.
The Terras had their first chance in the 29th minute from the counter attack. Captain Josh McQuoid steamed forward on the break before laying the ball off to Jordan Ngalo who blazed the ball over the bar.
Andy Dallas had Weymouth’s next chance in the 38th minute. The strikers effort was palmed over the cross bar.
Weymouth came out in the second half the stronger of the two sides, winning an early corner. The second ball fell to Jake McCarthy. The midfielder took the shot on the volley and it went well over the bar.
It was the visitors who had taken the lead in the 51st minute. Elisha Sam sprinted down the left wing. The winger had beaten Dominic Revan for pace before he managed to dig out a cross. His effort, taken by the strong winds at the Bob Lucas stadium, had looped up and over Ross, hitting the goalkeepers left post as it crossed the line.
The Magpies were pushing for a second, and put the Terras under pressure soon after they had scored the first goal. Ruben Rodrigues struck a free kick at aimed Ross’ near post. The young goalkeeper was quick to produce a save, getting down low to deny the effort.
The Terras came whiskers away from drawing level in the 61st minute. Andy Dallas’ cute turn after receiving the ball allowed Josh McQuoid to collect it from the striker. The captain played Jake McCarthy in space through on goal. The midfielder struck the ball straight at Sam Slocombe.
McCarthy had another effort seven minutes later. New signing Pierre Fonkeu came off the bench and looked lively for the Terras. The debutant brushed off challenges from 4 Notts County defenders before crossing a low ball into McCarthy’s feet. The number 8 looked up to pick out a shot but his effort was again matched by Slocombe. Although the shot was taken in a crowded area, the goalkeeper did well to produce a save.
The Magpies could have doubled their lead late on. A slip from Jake McCarthy gifted possession to Ruben Rodrigues. The striker turned past Revan to be one on one with Ross. The goalkeeper put two hands behind Rodrigues’ shot and quash the danger.
Fonkeu looked a real threat and came close to levelling the game in the 86th minute. The new signing found space after a cute turn around his defender and his shot, aimed at Slocombe’s near post was collected by the goalkeeper.
3 minutes of added time were not enough for the Terras to find an equaliser. The game ended 1-0. Weymouth putting in a positive display despite the result, with more positives for Tuesday’s fixture away to Boreham Wood.
