Report: Josh Barton

Weymouth Women battled to a 5-2 victory to set up a quarter-final clash with Holt Utd in the Dorset County Women’s Cup.

The opening stages of the clash were very scrappy and arguably the hosts had the better of the first half an hour. Terras keeper Georgia Richards was forced off her line on numerous occasions and the outstanding Emma Potter made several blocks to deny Broadstone taking the lead.

On 27 minutes, the game was halted due to a bizarre altercation between the home assistant referee and a spectator. Weymouth began to grow into the game shortly after this incident. Lucy Roberts and Shakira Howard whistled shots just wide of the target as Weymouth began to stamp their authority on the game.

Broadstone were industrious throughout the clash and they had some joy on the wings, testing the Weymouth back line with deep crosses. Weymouth’s class started to shine through though and right on half time the game took off. Tasha Sibley pounced on a loose ball to fire past the keeper much to the relief of manager Natalie Anderson and her team. There was a dubious amount of added time but Weymouth and Lily Beasley didn’t care as the Terras forward smashed in a second with virtually the last kick off the half.

The hosts started the second half brightly and on 56 minutes they got a deserved goal. The forward scoring from a tight angle after a slight lapse of concentration in the defence. You can’t keep a good team down though and on 68 minutes, the prolific Shakira Howard beat the offside trap to slot home a third for Weymouth, restoring their 2 goal lead.

Weymouth were really starting to play with flair and confidence and Broadstone did start to look weary. On 75 minutes, Lucy Roberts was found with a pinpoint delivery but her headed effort went agonisingly wide of the post. Weymouth continued to dominate and on 82 minutes, Howard had a tap-in to continue her unbelievable scoring record this season. On 87 minutes, November Player of the Month Beasley scored with another sublime effort to give the Terras a fifth of the afternoon.

Broadstone kept battling and they scored in added time to get their second of the afternoon, despite the assistant referee having his flag up for offside. Sadly, there were unsavoury scenes at full time as the Broadstone assistant referee had an uncomfortable argument with some of the Terras spectators.

Weymouth had to work hard for this one but they will now look forward to a tough clash with Holt Utd in the quarter-final.
