Weymouth vs Gosport Borough

Brandon Goodship’s hat-trick helps down poor Gosport Borough

WEYMOUTH thrashed Gosport Borough 5-0 in a one-sided encounter that saw striker Brandon Goodship score his 33rd league goal this season with a hat-trick, plus two assists, in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.

An early strike from Harry Baker put the Terras on their way while three subsequent strikes from Goodship effectively wrapped up the match against a side that struggled to contain the Terras’ attack and a late Edward Sanders own goal sealed a big victory for the home side.

Weymouth made one change as Calvin Brooks, who has four goals in his last three games, made way for Harry Baker.

The only other change for Weymouth was on the bench as Jordan Ngalo came in for Baker, while Brooks was not in the squad at all, having been substituted late on against Slough.

Gosport made three changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Biggleswade Town on Saturday.

Harvey Read, Jordan Brooks and Matthew Mayes come in for Ben Wright, assistant-manager and striker Rowan Vine plus Pat Suraci, who spent a one-month spell with the Terras earlier in the season.

Weymouth needed no time to settle into the match and scored with their first real attack as Baker nodded a crossfield ball from Goodship into the net.

A Ryan Case corner was then collected by home keeper Will Dennis as Gosport tried to respond shortly after.

Weymouth were finding it easy to get through the Gosport defence, who nearly handed Goodship a goal as he almost intercepted an O’Flaherty pass.

In the eighth minute, Case fired in a good strike from 25 yards but Dennis was equal to it and got down low to save.

In what was becoming a frantic start to the match, Caze da Silva then headed over a corner as the Terras continued to look for a second goal.

Callum Buckley was then afforded acres of space to run forward and pass the ball to Goodship, who fired at O’Flaherty from 30 yards.

It was dominant from Weymouth but Gosport were able to engineer chances.

Firstly, a free-kick from Case was headed wide by Harvey Read and a mix-up between Ashley Wells and Stephane Zubar allowed Joseph Lea in but he fired at Dennis from a tight angle.

A lovely pass from Thomson then allowed Goodship to double the Terras’ advantage in the 25th minute.

From that point on, Weymouth were extremely dominant as a whole host of opportunities came and went as they found it easy to penetrate the Gosport defence.

A one-sided half was cemented in the 44th minute, when Goodship curled in a lovely shot from just inside the box for his 32nd league goal of the season.

This ended a one-sided half for Weymouth but Gosport improved in the second as they became a much better defensive unit that the Terras found harder to break down.

The Terras still attacked well however, as early on Goodship nearly secured his hat-trick with a powerful strike from distance that went narrowly over.

Buckley and Abdulai Baggie worked well down the left to engineer a chance for Goodship, who could not find the touch to fire it past Flaherty.

Jake McCarthy had a powerful effort from distance that went over, while Baggie got through and fired narrowly wide.

Gosport had good possession but failed to produce any real chances as balls were either hit just out of play or threats were snuffed out by Weymouth’s alert defensive display.

However, Goodship grabbed his third in typical fashion, as he curled a shot around O’Flaherty from inside the box.

The action quietened slightly but Weymouth were still on top and Gosport seldom threatened.

Josh Carmichael fired an ambitious shot wide from distance as the Terras searched for a fifth.

But the score was eventually bolstered further as Goodship surged forward and crossed a dangerous ball in that Sanders slid into his own net.

A late corner for Gosport could not rescue even the tiniest consolation for the bottom-of-the-table side as the match ended 5-0.

Weymouth next travel to face Redditch United (3pm) on Saturday.
