One Goal Decides It
Weymouth rounded off their home pre season fixtures with a run out against Conference side Farnborough Town.
Lee PhillipsOn a bright afternoon with a slight breeze Weymouth attacked the car park end. Alex Browne was rested with his sore nose, Ian Hutchinson was not available due to his efforts in the maternity unit, and Michael Walker has signed for minor league Dorchester.
Farnborough came out all guns blazing and in the 7th minute a Tony Taggart cross was met by Joff Vansittart who headed inches over.
New signing Jason Matthews in the Weymouth goal earned himself the “Top Terra” awarded with a commanding display, non more so than in the fifteenth minute when he sprinted off his line to deny Leroy Griffiths.
Weymouth’s other new signing Steve Tulley looked solid, if a little unfit as he faded towards the end of the half, his well flighted free kick from outside the area was headed off the line by Jimmy O’Shea.
Both sides played some entertaining football with the Michael’s Dean and Sajic playing a pivotal role in Weymouth’s build up play.
Up, up and away.Farnborough’s only goal was scored on the 26th minute, Gary Holloway’s pass in the area to Tony Taggart was gleefully walloped home.
Weymouth took the game to the visitors, but with their well-marshaled defense looking quicker and fitter than the home side scoring opportunities in front of goal were rare.
Farnborough should have gone 2 up on 32 minutes, but with only the keeper to beat Dean Green witnessed his shot pushed away by the salmon like Matthews.
Matthews came to the rescue again, a long ball from defense gave Leroy Griffiths something to chase, beating the statuesque Bradford he raced goal wards but Matthews was out of his area and cleared well.
So at half time Weymouth trailed by a single goal.
The second half was dire, neither side looked capable of scoring although Phillips one on one with the keeper just after the break was well saved and the rebound he blasted over, and seconds later Sajic blasted wide with the goal at his mercy.
Farnborough’s Baptiste had a scorching 30-yard drive just skim the bar on 87 minutes but there was not a lot else to shout about.
So at the final whistle the score was: Weymouth 0 Farnborough Town 1
