Former Weymouth boss Andy Mason teamed up with another ex-Terras manager Trevor Senior when he made a surprise appearance for Screwfix Premier Division side Bridgwater last night.
But Portland United are still confident Mason will sign for them tomorrow night and make his debut in Saturday’s Jewson Wessex League clash with AFC Newbury at Grove Corner.
The Blues and Bridgwater have both been chasing the 34-year-old midfielder since he quit his assistant manager’s post at Weston-super-Mare last week after becoming fed up with the amount of travelling he was doing from his Weymouth home. And despite his appearance in Bridgwater’s goal-less draw against Devizes last night Blues boss Nick Preston says he’s sure he can persuade Mason to throw in his lot with the islanders when he joins them for training tomorrow.
“Andy told me he was going down to help Bridgwater out last night because he hasn’t played a full game for quite a while,” said Preston today. He thought it would also help him get fit for a full game for us against Newbury on Saturday so I’m confident he has every intention of signing for us tomorrow.”
But Senior refuses to give up hope that Mason may also play again for his side.
“There’s nothing to stop Andy signing for both ourselves and Portland and as we’ve got two games a week for the next month or so I’m hoping he might help us out again even if he does join them too,” said Senior. “I know he has had enough of travelling on his own to Weston, but we’re half an hour closer and with Paul Toms, Jorge and Tony Diaz and myself all driving from Dorset he would have plenty of company. We need someone with a bit more experience to help our good youngsters and Andy certainly did that last night. He played 80 minutes last night and put some telling passes through from central midfield. He almost got the winner with a shot into the side-netting.”
