Weymouth Football Club confirmed that they have been approached by local speedway promoter Brian White who has expressed an interest in operating a speedway track around the perimeter of the training pitch at the present Wessex Stadium site.
Said chairman Terry Bennett: “Mr White has submitted written details to the club. He is proposing a temporary 240 metre track, safety fencing, a stand, covered pit enclosure, and souvenir shop. He will utilise the toilets, turnstiles, bar and catering facilities of the Wessex Stadium. Exciting as this project sounds, both financially for Weymouth Football club and as a leisure activity for the town itself, we are mindful of the responsibilities we have to our neighbours. We have therefore insisted that he furnishes us with an environmental impact study which will include a noise evaluation.”
Speedway ended at the old Wessex Stadium in 1984, the new Wessex Stadium complex was erected on the redundant site in 1987.
