Garry Hill leads his Terras side into their last Nationwide Conference South away game of the season tonight wishing the campaign had a couple more weeks to run.
“The way things have worked out it would have been nice to have had three or four more games to play,” said Hill who takes his side to Sutton United’s Gander Green Lane (7.45pm) before finishing the season
against St Albans City at the Wessex Stadium on Saturday.
Mathematically the Terras could still creep into the play-offs if they add six more points to their tally and a whole raft of other results went their way.
But the former Dagenham and Redbridge boss is a realist and knows that would be a massive long-shot.
“I believe we will probably land up being one win short even if we manage to win our last two,” said Hill today. “However, I don’t look at tables and things. I will be focusing on the future and not the past and my job over the next two games is to continue looking at the players because I have some important decisions to make next week.”
With that in mind Hill plans to make changes from the side which won 3-1 at Hayes on Saturday, although he won’t be revealing them until he puts in his teamsheet at the Borough Sports Ground tonight.
“I want to look at a few different angles and it certainly won’t be the same side as Saturday,” he explained.
“We all know I have to make changes here for next season because the club has been sleeping for too long and has under-achieved.
“I need to know where the players are coming from and there is still time for people to sway me one way or
the other.
“So far I have been delighted with the ‘attitude of all the players. To win four of our first six games in charge with almost the same players has been first class and hopefully they will keep going out and playing to the best of their ability.
“I know I have some difficult decisions to make, but I won’t be doing anything until next Monday when I will be starting to talk to every player and member of our back-room staff.”
With no injury worries, Hill has named an unchanged squad for the trip to familiar Isthmian League territory where the home side can play out the season in relaxed mood after banishing any relegation worries with a 1-0 home win over Welling United on Saturday.
