AN ELATED Jason Matthews saw his side triumph in what was another “must-win” game for the Terras, as they saw off promotion chasing Leamington 1-0 at the Bob Lucas Stadium last night.

Jake Wannell’s 64th minute winner proved the difference as part of an absorbing display from the home side, whose player manager insisted afterwards “the belief is there” to make the top five.

Speaking about the win itself, Matthews told Echosport: “We said that it was a must-win game and we are right in the melting pot now.

“The boys gave me everything they had and I will give them full credit for what they did and the way they went about it.

“We really took the game to Leamington, they did come at us with some good aerial threat but I felt, overall, we were outstanding and we thoroughly deserved the goal in the second half.

“There was a fantastic atmosphere last night. I asked the fans for a big effort and they gave it. Fair play to Leamington, they brought a few down as well and it made for what was a good game.”

On Weymouth’s play-off prospects, Matthews added: “We went out and did the business last night and have given ourselves a really big chance with four games to go. We are building some momentum.

“The belief is there and we had left ourselves a mountain to climb. We are going some way into climbing it now and giving the loyal fans something to cheer about.”

The only downside to the evening was that Wannell was replaced due to a hamstring injury.
