JASON Matthews admitted “there is a real fight for places” to be a regular feature in his Terras’ side this term, as the club’s pre-season schedule is taken up a notch this week.
National league outfit Eastleigh are set to visit the Bob Lucas Stadium tonight (7.45pm) before Plymouth Argyle come to town on Saturday (3pm).
And, with the Terras’ chief believed to be hopeful of securing some of his trialists to stay with the club this week, Matthews admits he has “food for thought” over how Weymouth will set up for their first league game next month.
“There is a real fight for places now,” Matthews told Echosport.
“Bringing in a couple of different wingers (on trial) has really given me a lot of food for thought.
“But it is very much a squad game.
“I know it’s easy to say that but it would be very difficult to win the league with 11 or 12 players.
“Hopefully I have addressed that in pre-season and I feel we are moving in the right direction.”
Centre-half Jack Vallis, a trialist who made his first appearance for the Terras against Barnstaple Town on Friday, is likely to feature for the first time at home for the club tonight.
Speaking about Eastleigh, Matthews added: “They have just been to Scotland on a pre-season tour so I imagine they will be really fit and, for us, it’s a massive test.
“I want to get as many of the lads the same amount of minutes as we possibly can.
“The Eastleigh and the Plymouth games are two big games. Then, obviously Truro and Poole are in the league above us so, for me, it’s a tough pre-season schedule but a very good one.”
