JASON Matthews insists his current Terras’ squad are “playing for their futures” at the club.

The Terras’ boss has demonstrated he is willing to make the big decisions by letting former club skipper Stewart Yetton go on loan to Truro City for the rest of the campaign on Friday, and insists he needs to see some improvement from his personnel in the coming weeks.

Weymouth find themselves 20 points off the play-off places, cemented in mid-table in 12th spot at present, having initially targeted a top-five finish at the start of the campaign.

And with that looking highly unlikely, Matthews is eager for his current squad to rally in a bid to stake their claim for a place at the club next season.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s home clash with Dunstable Town (7.45pm), Matthews told Echosport: “The lads are playing for their futures.

“It’s up to them and their personal pride.

“A lot of work is to be done on the training ground and it’s a case of getting the right personnel to buy into what we are trying to do.”

He added: “Obviously we have underachieved a little bit this season, other than in the cups, where we have done well but that’s had an adverse effect on our league form.

“It’s the first season since I have been charge where it gets to February and we can’t really go up and can’t really go down.

“The objective is to go out and be positive and give the fans something to cheer.”

With Yetton’s departure obviously comes some room for Matthews to manoeuvre with his playing budget.

Asked if he was looking to add to the squad before the end of the season, the Terras’ boss added: “If someone came up that was worthwhile signing, with a view to next season, then we would.

“There’s not necessarily any immediate rush for what we are doing.

“With Ben Thomson and Mark Cooper returning it gives us two players we haven’t had for the last six weeks. You know what you are going to get with those two and that’s a plus-point.

“I am very much looking and seeing who wants to be here next year.”

Conor Jevon is set to return to the Weymouth squad to take on the Duns this evening.
