Last-gasp Brandon Goodship rescues Weymouth
BASINGSTOKE TOWN 3
Argent 30, Smart 40, Wright 56
WEYMOUTH 3
Goodship 44, Carmichael 57, Goodship 90+3
BRANDON Goodship rescued a point for the Terras in injury time on his first start since he returned from injury as Weymouth came from behind to draw 3-3 with Basingstoke Town in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.
For a long time the game appeared to be heading to a reverse of the Terras’ 3-2 win against the home side earlier in the season.
However, Goodship’s brace and a goal from Josh Carmichael saw Weymouth grab a late point.
In the starting line up the Terras included Stephane Zubar, who recently rejoined the club, and Goodship who had made a substitute appearance against Biggleswade Town on Saturday.
Basingstoke started on the front foot, with Ben Wright taking a free-kick in the second minute which went over the bar.
The hosts then had another shot three minutes later from Dan Collier which Zubar blocked.
The Terras were having to soak up pressure as three minutes later they had to clear away a corner before George Bennett curled a shot over.
Mark Cooper was then booked after keeper Mark Travers collided with Sam Smart on the edge of the box.
The resulting free-kick was taken by Wright but hit the wall before being cleared away.
Callum Buckley and Zubar were doing well however, as despite the chances, Basingstoke were struggling to create a good chance.
On the 24th minute, Weymouth had a good chance as Carmichael put Harry Baker through but he fired his shot over the bar.
Two minutes later though, a Smart cross met Wright, who put his effort over the bar for the hosts.
The pressure told as Basingstoke took the lead in the 30th minute as a cross from Smart was aimed towards Sam Argent, who headed in at the far post.
Goalscorer Argent then had a good chance three minutes later as he got past Cooper in the box but his shot was blocked by Buckley.
Baker then had a good chance as from a corner his shot was headed away by Jack McKnight.
In what was proving a frantic finish to the half, Goodship ran to the byline and dragged the ball across the box but it was cleared.
Goodship then took aim from the edge of the box but it was saved by Colm McAdden in the Basingstoke goal.
Provider turned finisher for Basingstoke as Smart smashed the ball into the top corner off the bar on the 40th minute.
Four minutes later, Goodship halved the deficit for the Terras after burying a shot past McAdden from close range as the first half ended 2-1 to the home side.
The second period began quietly with Weymouth doing well without any real chances until the 58th minute, when Goodship had a shot blocked from the edge of the area.
Three minutes later, Carmichael gave away a free-kick and was given a yellow card for a foul on Smart.
This started a hectic couple of minutes, as from the resulting free-kick, Wright buried the ball into the top corner to extend the hosts’ lead in the 56th minute.
However, a minute later, Carmichael made amends for giving away the free-kick by firing home to narrow the scores again.
Wright then nearly extended the lead for Basingstoke again as he forced Travers into a great save from a free-kick.
The game then settled down into an even contest as no clear-cut chances were created by either side.
McKnight took a shot from distance which went wide of a post and Wright put a cross from Argent wide for the home side.
Weymouth were looking for an equaliser and it came late on as in the 93rd minute Goodship ensured a happy return as he drew Weymouth level.
The Terras are next in action at home against Chesham United in the league on Saturday.
