Magpies hit back to gain point from derby thriller

WEYMOUTH 2

Davis 39, Goodship 62

DORCHESTER TOWN 2

Egan 70, Lanahan 77

WEYMOUTH conceded two second-half goals from Kyle Egan and Sam Lanahan to draw 2-2, after Charlie Davis and Brandon Goodship had put them ahead in the Ridgeway derby against Dorchester in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

The heated encounter saw the Terras absorb a lot of pressure from the Magpies before taking the lead in the 39th minute through a low shot from the edge of the box from Davis, before Goodship extended the lead in the 62nd with a deflected strike.

A seven-minute spell in the second-half saw Egan fire under Mark Travers while Lanahan drew the Magpies level after defensive error from Callum Buckley and Travers.

The Terras stuck with the same starting 11 that beat Banbury United 2-1 and that thrashed Redditch United 5-0 on the weekend.

Dorchester made two changes with Gary Bowles replacing Ross Carmichael and Phil Ormrod coming in for Mo Baghdadi who has left the Magpies following the expiration of his loan.

Weymouth had won four of the last five league derbies, with their last defeat coming in August 2015.

The fans were in loud voice in the build up to the match and a flare was lit before kick-off by the Magpies’ fans while a cracker was let off in the first few minutes of the match.

The match started in a heated fashion as Luke Winsper slid in on Josh Carmichael to give away an early foul.

Dorchester missed an early chance when Antonio Diaz let Egan run down the right before crossing but Ormrod couldn’t get to it from six yards out.

In the 10th minute, Weymouth had a great chance on the break after clearing a cross from Ed Bastick as Carmichael got the ball to Ben Thomson who had his shot blocked.

Bowles attempted to catch Weymouth goalkeeper Travers off his line from 40 yards out with a free-kick but his shot went over.

The Magpies had a great chance in the 20th minute as Lanahan fired over from 12 yards out following a cross from Egan.

The Terras were growing in confidence and after a shot from Davis was well saved by Chris Weale in the Dorchester goal.

Davis then opened the scoring with a superb shot from the edge of the box that went under Weale near the left-hand corner of the net.

Brooks nearly doubled the lead with a superb run down the right as he cut in and fired a curling shot that was well saved by Weale.

The Terras took a 1-0 lead into the break despite having had to absorb a lot of pressure from the Magpies.

The second-half saw another cracker let off by the Magpies’ fans in the 48th minute as the Terras attacked.

Bowles then missed a great chance as he found himself in the box following a Neil Martin free-kick but he shot straight at Travers.

Goodship then curled a shot over from just outside the box but the match was stopped for a time as Weymouth fans behind Weale refused to return the ball.

Baggie had a great chance as he ran through the Dorchester defence but Weale got down well to his right, from the resulting corner Carmichael fired over from 30 yards out.

The Terras doubled their lead in the 62nd minute as Carmichael made a superb pass through to Baker who laid the ball off to Goodship who cut inside and fired a deflected shot past Weale.

The Magpies had a free-kick soon after as they looked to get back into the match but it was headed away by Carmichael, while a corner moments later was swung harmlessly wide by Diaz.

However, the Magpies would narrow the gap as the spell of pressure told as Egan steered a shot underneath Travers soon after.

Dorchester then equalised through Lanahan in the 77th minute after Buckley and Travers got in a mix- up.

The Terras tried to respond through Goodship who curled a shot over the bar in the 80th minute but neither side could find a breakthrough as the game wound to a close.

Weymouth are next in action on New Year’s Day as they face a trip to second from bottom in the table Gosport Borough while Dorchester are at home to Tiverton Town.
