KING’S LYNN TOWN 1
Lappin 75
WEYMOUTH 1
Goodship 86
BRANDON Goodship grabbed a point for the Terras as they drew 1-1 away to King’s Lynn Town after Simon Lappin had put the Linnets ahead in the 75th minute in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.
Linnets keeper Alex Street was in superb form as Weymouth found it tough to break through despite some superb chances against a side who had been top of the table, but have now been replaced at the top by Kettering Town who won 4-2 away at Merthyr Town.
The Terras made one change as Tiago Sa came in for Jake McCarthy who made his first start in the league for Weymouth since November 18 after suffering from appendicitis.
Mark Cooper was absent from the squad as he recovers from an injury which he picked up playing for Melksham Town and was exacerbated during the 1-0 defeat to Larkhall Athletic.
The Linnets were unchanged from their 0-0 draw against Frome Town last week and have not beaten the Terras in their last six league meetings.
Josh Carmichael had the first real chance in the sixth minute with a shot from outside the box which was saved by Street in the Linnets’ goal.
Stephane Zubar was called into action two minutes later as he had to block a shot from Craig Parker and from the rebound King’s Lynn captain Michael Clunan drilled it wide.
In the 12th minute the Linnets had a great chance as Ryan Jarvis crossed in but Ryan Fryatt headed over.
The Terras then had their turn to have a good effort as a deflected shot from Abdulai Baggie forced Street into another save in the 14th minute.
The Terras came inches from scoring three minutes later as Ben Thomson threaded the ball to Goodship whose shot is pushed onto the underside of the bar and out by Street.
Weymouth were marginally on top in what was proving to be a good match between the two well-matched teams.
Cameron Norman fired over in the 35th minute after a Linnets corner as the Linnets looked for a lead.
A minute later Baggie had two shots in short succession blocked away and in the 38th minute Calvin Brooks fired over for Weymouth.
The match was end to end as shortly after Michael Gash headed over a Lappin free-kick on the edge of the box for the Linnets while Callum Buckley nearly found Brooks with a cross into the box.
Both sides had late attacking chances as the Linnets had a late free-kick while an attack after gave Weymouth a late corner but neither side could find a breakthrough before half time.
Davis then went close to being the provider as he made a superb cross into the Linnets’ box which was met by Thomson but Street managed to save down low to his left as Weymouth enjoyed a good start to the second half.
The Terras were attacking well as Carmichael got the ball from a Baggie flick but his shot hit the bottom of the post and went out of play.
In the 63rd minute the Linnets had a good chance as Lappin again provided the ball for Gash who headed over.
Zubar then received a yellow card for a foul on King’s Lynn substitute Ryan Hawkins during a break away from the home side in the 66th minute.
The Linnets then had a chance which saw Norman fire over after a well worked move.
The home side took the lead in the 75th minute as Clunan crossed in which Dennis pushed away but it fell to Lappin who headed in.
Goodship came very close to an equaliser soon after the goal as Street made a great save to deny his long range effort.
In the 83rd minute Thomson had another effort saved by Street as Weymouth pushed for an equaliser in what was a great performance from the King’s Lynn keeper.
The equaliser did come though as Goodship fired low past Street from inside the box to set up a tense finish to the match.
The match came to an end without further incident as the two teams shared a point after a good encounter.
Weymouth are next in league action on Tuesday when they travel to face to Dunstable Town (7.45pm).
