Weymouth claim a big victory at Casuals

WALTON CASUALS 1

Ewington 10

WEYMOUTH 2

Thomson 4, Goodship 69

BRANDON Goodship netted a 69th-minute winner as Weymouth ended their three-game winless run in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South with a 2-1 victory at Walton Casuals.

Ben Thomson had handed the Terras a lead in the fourth minute, before James Ewington pegged them back six minutes later, but once again Goodship provided the vital goal as Weymouth beat the Casuals.

Prior to the match it was a familiar story for Weymouth, as they announced the signing of former Eastleigh goalkeeper Mark Childs, who was on the bench.

In joining the Terras, Childs became the third goalkeeper to join Weymouth in the past month.

Of bigger importance for Weymouth was the return of Sam Sherring however, as he and Abdulai Baggie replaced Ashley Wells and Josh Wakefield as the Terras made two changes.

The game did not take long to get going, with the first noteworthy action a goal.

Thomson settled any early nerves, rifling in from 18 yards out after a great surging run from Calvin Brooks, who shrugged off numerous defenders to lay it off to Thomson.

The game’s frantic early pace had been set and the Casuals were happy to oblige with it, equalising with 10 minutes on the clock.

Harry Mills got the ball forward to Dan Bennett, who crossed in for Ewington to tap in at the far post.

Three minutes later, one of the Casuals went into the book for a challenge on Jake McCarthy.

From the free-kick Josh Carmichael went close, but his effort sailed just wide of the post.

Four minutes later, McCarthy played Goodship through, but a heavy touch saw the ball go out of play.

After 24 minutes, Walton again threatened when Taureen Roberts broke through the middle and slid the ball along to Bradley Keetch, who played the ball back to Roberts but his shot was over the bar.

Weymouth then threatened again when Baggie pinged a great ball up to Thomson, but the ball narrowly evaded him at the back post and the Casuals cleared.

Soon after, Thomson flicked on to put Goodship one-on-one with Denzel Gerrar, but he fired his shot over the bar.

After 37 minutes, the Terras again went close when Brooks, Baggie and Thomson all worked well together, before the latter played the ball to Goodship who struck an effort narrowly wide from the edge of the area.

Despite the pressure, Weymouth could not find a route through the Surrey side, and the two sides went in deadlocked at the interval.

Roberts had the first chance of the second half, which fell to the Casuals, but his shot was weak and no issue for Weymouth goalkeeper Tom McHale.

There was good, early work from the Casuals’ half-time substitute Cole Brown, who got into the box but passed up the chance to shoot before he crossed in towards, and narrowly did not reach, Ewington as the Terras cleared.

The Casuals continued their pressure as Bennett crossed in towards Keetch who sliced a deflected effort over the bar.

Yet it would be the Terras who would break the deadlock next.

Goodship slammed a brilliant 20-yard shot past Gerrar to hand Weymouth a much-needed lead after 69 minutes.

Gerrar had to be alert late on to deny Goodship a second when one-on-one, as the Terras went close in the 85th minute.

Walton had a late penalty shout through Bennett, who subsequently had to go off as a result of the challenge, but the referee turned it away.

The Terras held on however, to claim a highly-prized win on the road.

As a result of the victory, Weymouth moved up to second in the table, but the Met Police can overtake them with a win in their game in hand over the Terras.
