Mark Molesley has said that despite Weymouth’s 4-1 victory away to Staines Town on Saturday, the Terras will continue to be be “ultra-critical” of themselves in a bid to improve week on week.
Speaking to theterras.com after Saturday’s win Molesley said it was nice to get back to winning ways after a two week break.
“I’m delighted to get a win, we’ve obviously had a little bit of a sticky patch. Having no game last week makes it seem like a while since we last won, so we just wanted to get back on the horse so to speak. It was all about getting the three points and we got that.
“At times you could tell we hadn’t played for a few weeks, there was a little bit of over-eagerness and it wasn’t quite clicking into gear at all times; but we were away from home against a young, energetic, good Staines side and we had to be willing to show all aspect of the game, and we did that today.”
Molesley praised the playing surface at Staines Town and admitted it was one which should have played into Weymouth’s hands, “It was a lovely, beautiful surface, one which our boys were purring at,” the Terras boss told theterras.com “We were a little bit sloppy on it at times, which was disappointing because you don’t want to waste such a good pitch. But at same time we’ve gone away from home and won 4-1, so we’re pleased with the points, we’re always ultra-critical of ourselves whether we win, lose or draw. We’ll continue to work hard and try to improve.”
Molesley believes that Weymouth showed that they are capable of scoring in a variety of different methods and showed this against Staines Town, “There’s more than a few ways to skin a cat, we’ve shown that we can score all types of goals” he added, “We can score from set-pieces, score from open play, score from flowing passing moves and we can go a little bit more direct sometimes.
“We’re flexing our muscles in a range of ways at the moment, but we also need to fine-tune and sharpen up on a couple of bits. But on the whole we are delighted with the three points and it was good to get a game again, after two weeks you just want to get playing again.”
The Weymouth boss also took time to hail the returning Calvin Brooks, saying he was delighted to see the attacking full-back return.
“It was great to see Calvin (Brooks) come back, we’ve been working on that behind the scenes for the last few weeks, so I was delighted to see that come off. I was delighted that the board, the fans and everyone around has helped make that, because we’ve had some large attendances lately and that helps with things like this. I’m glad that the board have backed me by bringing in a player of that ilk, and somebody we’ve needed.
“Unfortunately we’ve had a few injuries of late, we’ve lost Josh McQuoid for the foreseeable future, and he’s going to be months rather than weeks. Hopefully Buckley is going to be weeks rather than months, so we’ve got him to come back. Unfortunately we’ve lost Josh Carmichael with a back injury in training on Thursday. It happens during the season, so you’ve got to call on all your squad, but Calvin comes in and strengthens us at a time when we need him.
“I’m delighted to see him, he’s yet to reach his prime; he’s athletic, he’s quick, he knows the way we work, he loves the club and knows the level so he ticks every box for us.”
Speaking ahead of tonight’s Southern League Challenge Cup game at Wimborne Town (7:45pm Kick-Off), Molesley has said that it will be a good chance to give minutes to certain players, “We’ll look how to put our best foot forward in the cup competition. We’ll see how we approach that and see how people respond from the win at Staines. We’ve got a few injuries at the moment so we need to be wary of keeping our players fit, fresh and fighting for our league campaign. But the game will be great for some players who need minutes.”
